Professor Beom Jae Lee's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal disorders, particularly irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and acute pancreatitis, with an emphasis on understanding the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms such as gut microbiota imbalance, low-grade inflammation, and brain-gut axis dysfunction. The lab also investigates novel therapeutic strategies, including pharmacological modulation of sphingolipid metabolism and endoscopic management of gastric bezoars. Their work integrates clinical studies with preclinical models to explore innovative treatments for digestive diseases.

15Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a complex disorder characterized by abdominal symptoms including chronic abdominal pain or discomfort and altered bowel habits. The etiology of IBS is multifactorial, as abnormal gut motility, visceral hypersensitivity, disturbed neural function of the brain-gut axis and an abnormal autonomic nervous system are all implicated in disease progression. Based on recent experimental and clinical studies, it has been suggested that additional etiological factors inclu
The rate of complete dissolution with three liters of cola was 23.5%, but no case of diospyrobezoar was completely dissolved using this method. However, pretreatment with cola may be helpful and facilitate endoscopic fragmentation of gastric phytobezoars.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although both corticosteroids and pentoxifylline are currently recommended drugs for the treatment of patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis, their effectiveness in reducing mortality remains unclear. In this systematic review, we aimed to evaluate the therapeutic and adverse effects of corticosteroids, pentoxifylline, and combination by using Cochrane methodology and therefore determine optimal treatment for severe alcoholic hepatitis. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Severe acute pancreatitis occurs in about 20% of the patients with acute pancreatitis and can be associated with multiorgan failure and local complications. In patients with predicted severe acute pancreatitis, overall mortality rates are about 15-30%. The aim of this study was to determine the factors correlated with mortality in patients with severe acute pancreatitis. METHODS: We reviewed five hundread and seventy two consecutive cases of acute pancreatitis from January, 2000
BACKGROUND: Sphingolipids play a very important role in cell membrane formation, signal transduction and plasma lipoprotein metabolism. The first rate-limiting step in the sphingolipid biosynthetic pathway is catalyzed by serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), and myriocin is a potent and specific inhibitor of SPT. We investigated the impact of SPT inhibition on cholesterol gallstone formation in C57BL/6J mice. METHODS: Three groups of eight-week-old C57BL/6J mice were utilized. Each group consisted
Various omics-based biomarkers related to the occurrence, progression, and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) have been identified. In this study, we attempted to identify gut microbiome-based biomarkers and detect their association with host gene expression in the initiation and progression of CRC by integrating analysis of the gut mucosal metagenome, RNA sequencing, and sociomedical factors. We performed metagenome and RNA sequencing on colonic mucosa samples from 13 patients with advanced C
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Capsule endoscopy (CE) has become a valuable modality for the detection of small bowel lesions. The usefulness of CE for obscure gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding has been established with an overall diagnostic yield of 60%. It is unknown whether CE is of equal value in all the patients or of greater benefit in selected groups in Korea. We evaluated the factors that affect the diagnostic yields of CE in patients with obscure GI bleeding. METHODS: CE was performed in 126 consecutive
Simvastatin and troglitazone synergistically inhibited cell proliferation in activated PaSCs by blocking the cell cycle beyond the G0/G1 phase. This inhibition was due to the synergistic modulation of the ERK pathway and the cell cycle machinery protein p27Kip1.
We report a cirrhotic patient with duodenal vascular ectasia and spontaneous bleeding. The bleeding was successfully controlled with argon plasma coagulation. Duodenal vascular ectasia may be a cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with cirrhosis, and argon plasma coagulation may be effective and safe to achieve hemostasis of this lesion.
Background/Aims: Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors (statins) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) ligands can modulate cellular differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis through various pathways. It has been shown that HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors and PPARγ agonists separately inhibit pancreatic stellate cell (PaSC) activation. We studied the effects of a combination of both types of drugs on activated PaSCs via platelet-derived growth
