Professor Bongyoung Kim's research lab focuses on antimicrobial resistance, infectious disease epidemiology, and clinical antimicrobial stewardship, with a strong emphasis on optimizing antibiotic use in diverse healthcare settings across South Korea. The lab investigates surrogate markers for metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, particularly in Korean populations, while also conducting genomic and microbiological analyses of pathogenic bacteria like extraintestinal pathogenic *E. coli* (ExPEC). Their work spans both population-level surveillance and hospital-based interventions, including point-prevalence studies and time-series analyses of antibiotic consumption and resistance trends. The lab is particularly active in evaluating the impact of infectious disease specialists in antimicrobial stewardship programs and in assessing the appropriateness and risk factors associated with indwelling urinary catheter use and catheter-associated infections.
