研究室紹介

Professor Byeonghun Ahn's research lab specializes in ophthalmic research with a focus on glaucoma and color vision disorders. The lab investigates the pathogenesis of primary open-angle glaucoma, particularly the role of gelatinase A in aqueous humor, and develops innovative glaucoma shunt devices such as the MicroMT shunt for improved intraocular pressure control. The lab also conducts epidemiological studies on congenital color deficiency, especially in Asian populations, and evaluates novel surgical techniques and medical education models in ophthalmology.

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

It is important to investigate the incidence of congenital color deficiency and to determine the type and degree because the color deficiency can effect as a handicap to certain occupations. The incidence of congenital color deficiency is remarkably constant among Caucasians but other races show considerable variations. We investigated the incidence of congenital color deficiency among Koreans by the use of H-R-R pseudoisochromatic plates. The present study revealed that the incidence of congeni

A comparison of the clinical effect between e-PTFE membrane-tube implant and Ahmed glaucoma valve implant for the treatment of refractory glaucoma
Youn Joo Choi, Chang Sik Kim, Byung-Heon Ahn
SJR Q2Korean Journal of Ophthalmology

In order to compare the clinical efficacy of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane-tube implant (MT implant) and Ahmed implant in the treatment of refractory glaucoma, the medical records of the patients who had been followed-up for more than 1 year after glaucoma implant surgery were reviewed retrospectively. Either MT or Ahmed implants were selected randomly and implanted by one surgeon in patients with refractory glaucoma. There was no significant difference in clinical variables such as

Novel membrane‐tube type glaucoma shunt device for glaucoma surgery
Byung Heon Ahn, Young Hoon Hwang, Jong Chul Han
SJR Q1Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology

BACKGROUND: The background of this study is to introduce the surgical technique and outcomes of a novel membrane-tube (MT) type glaucoma shunt device (MicroMT), which was developed to achieve safer and more predictable intraocular pressure (IOP) control compared with conventional trabeculectomy. DESIGN: This is a retrospective, non-comparative, interventional case series study. PARTICIPANTS: The MicroMT was implanted in 43 glaucomatous eyes with insufficient IOP control despite medical treatment

Purpose: Recently established in 1997, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine was the first medical school in Korea to adopt problem-based learning (PBL) as a core curriculum from the very beginning. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the PBL curriculum from the viewpoint of the medical students. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach to understand students' perceptions of the positive aspects of PBL. A total of 22 second-year medical students at Sungkyunkwan medical school

SJR Q2Korean journal of medical educationOA

Standardized patients (SPs) are either persons who are trained to simulate a patient's illness in a standardized way or actual patients. Newly established Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine started problem based learning (PBL) curriculum and SP program has been developed for teaching and evaluating clinical skills in medical education. Standardized patients were recruited from the community. Small-group SP training sessions were operated by two SP trainers and supervised by a clinical fa

Repetitive low-dose tissue plasminogen activator for the clearance of experimental vitreous hemorrhage
Woog Ki Min, Yong Baek Kim, Byung Heon Ahn, Geun Hae Seong
SJR Q2Korean Journal of Ophthalmology

Our previous experimental work with tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) suggested the possibility of the clearance of vitreous hemorrhage by repetitive injections of low-dose TPA. We therefore investigated in rabbits the effect of both repeated injections of TPA and the change of the integrity of the vitreous body on the clearance of vitreous hemorrhage. Vitreous hemorrhage was produced by intravitreal injection of 0.05 ml of autologous whole blood in the pigmented rabbit eyes with intact vitreou
