Professor Chang-Woong Woo's research lab specializes in gravitational wave astrophysics, focusing on the detection and characterization of stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds using data from advanced interferometric detectors such as Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. The lab develops innovative data analysis techniques, including gravitational-wave radiometry and spherical harmonic decomposition, to map diffuse and directional gravitational-wave signals across the sky. Their work emphasizes the search for both isotropic and anisotropic backgrounds, as well as emissions from spatially extended and point-like sources, advancing our understanding of cosmic phenomena such as early-universe processes and compact object populations. The lab also pioneers efficient computational pipelines like pystoch to enhance sensitivity and scalability in large-scale gravitational-wave searches.
