研究室紹介

Professor Cheol-wook Ahn's research lab focuses on the intersection of metabolic health, obesity, and insulin resistance, with a particular emphasis on the role of bone metabolism, adipokines, and body composition in type 2 diabetes and related cardiometabolic disorders. The lab investigates how exercise, hormonal interventions like growth hormone therapy, and lifestyle modifications influence insulin sensitivity, adipose tissue distribution, and vascular health in obese and diabetic populations. Key research directions include the pathophysiological role of osteocalcin and adiponectin, the impact of body fat distribution on metabolic risk, and the development of biomarkers for early detection of insulin resistance and atherosclerosis. The lab employs clinical, biochemical, and imaging techniques to explore mechanisms linking metabolism, bone, and cardiovascular health in metabolic disease.

The effects of aerobic exercise training on serum osteocalcin, adipocytokines and insulin resistance on obese young males

SJR Q2Clinical EndocrinologyOA

OBJECTIVE: Osteocalcin has been proposed to be a novel link between bone and energy metabolism. Previous studies showed its relations to exercise, body fat and glucose metabolism, but their interrelationship remains inconslusive. We evaluated the changes in osteocalcin level following 8-week exercise programme and assessed how they are related to concomitant changes in body fat composition, insulin resistance and various adipocytokines in a single centre, randomized and prospective design. SJR Q1International Journal of Gynecology & ObstetricsOA

OBJECTIVES: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) presents a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. We studied a group of women with PCOS and evaluated this defect in insulin action. METHODS: The study population consisted of nine PCOS women, six obese type 2 diabetic patients, and five controls whose body mass index (BMI) was similar to that of the nine PCOS women. The 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic glucose clamp test were performed. Clinical c

The association of insulin resistance and carotid atherosclerosis with thigh and calf circumference in patients with type 2 diabetes

SJR Q1Cardiovascular DiabetologyOA

BACKGROUND: The relationship between body composition parameters such as thigh and calf circumference and insulin resistance or atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, and thigh and calf circumference in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: A total of 4,427 subjects with type 2 diabetes were enrolled in this study. Insulin sensitivity was assessed according the rate constant

SJR Q1ObesityOA

OBJECTIVE: Clinical aspects of diabetes and obesity are somewhat different, even at similar levels of insulin resistance. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in body fat distribution and serum adiponectin concentrations in diabetic and non-diabetic obese participants. We were also interested in identifying the characteristics of insulin resistance in these two groups, particularly from the standpoint of adiponectin. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Adiponectin concentrations o

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the combined effects of GH treatment and diet restriction on lipolysis and anabolism, insulin resistance and atherosclerotic risk factors in obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). SUBJECTS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 24 obese T2DM patients (male : female = 12 : 12, mean age 53.7 +/- 7.2 years) with poor glycaemic control (fasting plasma glucose 10.673 +/- 1.121 mmol/l, HbA(1C) 9.9 +/- 2.3%). SJR Q1European Journal of EndocrinologyOA

OBJECTIVE: Osteoprotegerin (OPG) acts as an important regulatory molecule in atherosclerosis. Recent studies report that thiazolidinediones could affect OPG expression. We investigated the relationship between OPG and inflammatory cytokines and the effects of pioglitazone (a PPARγ (PPARG) agonist) versus metformin on serum OPG levels in type 2 diabetic patients. DESIGN AND METHODS: Sixty-seven type 2 diabetic patients were included in this study. They were assigned to pioglitazone (15 mg/day, n=

To assess the validity of urine albumin concentration (UAC) and the urine albumin:creatine ratio (UACR) in a random urine specimen (RUS) for screening diabetic nephropathy in Korea, a total of 105 ambulatory diabetes mellitus patients (male:female, 52:53), ages 40-75 years (median 59 years) collected 105 RUSs after completing a timed 24 hour urine collection. Albumin was measured by immunonephelometry. According to the timed urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER) measured in the 24 hour collectio
