Professor Cheolsung Park's research lab specializes in labor economics, household decision-making, and education economics, with a strong focus on intrahousehold resource allocation, risk pooling in rural communities, and the economic returns to education. The lab investigates how individual and family-level decisions—particularly in education, health, and consumption—are shaped by market dynamics, social networks, and institutional reforms such as work-hour regulations. A central theme is understanding non-unitary household behavior and the role of social insurance mechanisms in rural and developing settings.

15Abstract Test of resource pooling and test of effect of sex ratio in the marriage market on intrahousehold resource allocation are combined to test the unitary household model. The consistency condition between the two tests is derived to test the Nash household bargaining and Pareto‐efficient household models. I examine intrahousehold resource allocation to children's nutrition and education in Indonesia. For children's nutrition, the unitary household model is rejected in favour of the non‐uni
Using data from rural Bangladesh, I test whether income risks are pooled among villagers, between neighboring households, and between related households living in different villages. I find evidence that risks to food consumption are pooled between neighboring households and between related households but not among villagers. As for nonfood consumption, I find little evidence of risk pooling except between unrelated neighboring households. I also find that, while households belonging to a neighb

This paper discusses the economic value of college education as well as general education. Major findings are as follows: First, the rate of return to one more year of education in college, in Korea, ranges from 9% to 17%, depending on the demand and supply conditions in the labor market. Second, the returns to education increase when the economic environment is in the dynamic and rapidly changing state rather than it is in the steady state. Finally, “general education” is more important than “p

We examine whether the effect of sibship size on education differs by the individual's birth order in low-income countries, using data from Matlab, Bangladesh. Exploiting exposure to the randomized family planning program in Matlab for identification, we find evidence that sibship size has negative effect on education and positive effect on labor force participation of the first and the second-born children, but no significant effect on education or labor force participation of the later-born ch
Exploiting new data from South Korea on intergenerational transfers made in regular and irregular intervals, I examine what determines and motivates upstream transfers. The results indicate that regular transfers are largely motivated by altruism, but that irregular and in-kind transfers are unresponsive to parental economic need. The findings imply that public old-age support would crowd out regular transfers to some extent. It is also found that roles are divided among siblings in supporting t
In this paper, we estimate the impact of non-cognitive ability on the labor market performance in Korea using Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) data. Non-cognitive ability is measured by ‘self-esteem’ and ‘locus of control’ scores. Our findings are as follows. First, the rate of return to education is still estimated to be substantial, but somewhat smaller, when non-cognitive ability is controlled for in the estimation. Specifically, one additional year of college education is estimate
We examine whether having a holiday trip affects an individual’s well-being, namely quality of life, health status, stress level and health behaviours. We use the two-stage estimation method to control for endogeneity of a travel experience, exploiting a natural experiment of distributing Travel Vouchers at random among qualified applicants in South Korea in 2012. We find that, for applicants whose decision to travel is influenced by receiving a voucher, a travel experience has no significant ef
