Professor Choi Yong-Sang's research lab specializes in climate system dynamics, with a focus on climate sensitivity, feedback mechanisms, and extreme weather events. The lab investigates the role of cloud feedbacks—particularly the anvil cirrus 'iris effect'—in regulating tropical climate and Earth's energy balance. It also conducts detailed analyses of regional climate extremes, especially over East Asia, using observational data and advanced statistical methods such as Markov chain modeling. The lab emphasizes high-resolution regional reanalysis to improve climate monitoring and prediction for Korea and neighboring regions.

We estimate climate sensitivity from observations, using the deseasonalized fluctuations in sea surface temperatures (SSTs)and the concurrent fluctuations in the top-of-atmosphere (TOA)outgoing radiation from the ERBE (1985-1999) and CERES (2000-2008) satellite instruments. 국제기후변화협약 및 정부의 저탄소 정책은 기본적으로 과학이 제시한 이산화탄소 증가에 대한 기후민감도에근거해야 한다. 그러나 기후민감도의 추정치는 현재까지 연구 단위별로 차이가 커서, 이에 대한 과학적 배경, 한계, 전망을 고찰할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 지금까지의 기후민감도에 대한 국내외 연구 결과를 객관적으로 종합하여 검토한다. 기후민감도를 결정하는 것은 대기와 지면의 각종 물리과정에 의한 기후피드백 작용이며, 이 중 특히 태양 단파복사량을 조절하는 구름, 해빙과 관련된 물리과정은 불확실성이 가장 커서, 부정확한 민감도 추정을 야기하는 것으로 보인다. 이 때문에, 최근 인공위성 자료를 이용하여 추정한 기후민감도는 기후모델들이 갖는 범위(대기 중 이산화탄소 2배 증가당 지구평균기온 2-5 K 증가)에 들거나, 그보다 훨씬 작은 값을 갖는다.

매개 중심성을 이용한 해양 플라스틱 폐기물의 경로 예측 및 효율적인 수거지점 제안

우리나라에서 플라스틱으로 인한 해양오염이 심각함에도 불구하고 경로 예측 및 수거 방안에 대한 연구는 찾아보기어렵다. 본 연구에서는 미국 해양대기청(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA)의 해양 표층해류 시뮬레이터(Ocean Surface CURrent Simulator, OSCURS)를 이용하여 2004년부터 2013년까지 계절별로 동․서해로 유입된 플라스틱 폐기물의 이동 경로를 예측하였고, 매개 중심성 분석을 통하여 효율적인 수거지점을 제안하였다. 효율적인 수거지점의 대부분이 계절과 상관없이 연안에 형성되었고, 그중에서도 동해는 울진 연안, 서해는 새만금-신안 연안이 플라스틱 폐기물을 효율적으로 수거할 수 있는 지역이었다.

위성관측운량 보정을 위한 알고리즘의 개발

본 연구에서는 위성관측운량을 지상관측운량에 가깝게 보정하기 위한 알고리즘을 개발하였다. 위성관측운량과 지상관측운량은 같은 구름을 각각 평면과 반구면에 투영한 관점이라는 차이를 가진다. 따라서, 개발된 위성보정 알고리즘은 평면의 위성관측 영역에 투영된 구름에 적절한 높이를 부여하여 지상관측 영역인 반구면에 투영된 구름으로 변환하는 것이 핵심이다. 이때 평면구름은 위성 구름탐지를 이용하며, 높이는 운정압력을 이용하여 결정한다. Himawari-8 Level 1B 관측자료로 입력자료를 만들어 기존의 위성관측운량과 개발된알고리즘을 통해 산출한 위성관측운량을 2016년 7월부터 2017년 6월, 매월 1일부터 7일까지 낮 시간 동안 한국(22개소)과 중국(724개소)의 종관지상관측소의 목측 전운량에 대해 검증하였다. 그 결과, 개발된 알고리즘을 통해 산출한 보정위성관측운량이 기존 위성관측운량에 비해 작은 평균오차(1.01 →0.61)를 가지며, 예측의 성공률(PC) 또한 증가(55% →61%
