Chun-gyu Kim

Professor Chun-gyu Kim's research lab specializes in the molecular genetics and biochemical characterization of antibiotic biosynthesis in actinomycetes, with a focus on the identification and functional analysis of genes involved in the production of complex natural products such as enediyne, ansamycin, and macrolide antibiotics. The lab investigates biosynthetic pathways, including polyketide synthases and deoxysugar formation, and explores resistance mechanisms, regulatory systems, and transport proteins essential for antibiotic self-protection and secretion. Their work integrates molecular biology, PCR-based gene cloning, heterologous expression, and enzyme kinetics to understand and harness the potential of these compounds for medical applications.
