Professor Chun Soo Lim's research lab focuses on critical care and nephrology, with a strong emphasis on acute kidney injury, electrolyte disorders such as severe hyperkalemia, and the long-term neurological and quality-of-life outcomes following cardiac arrest. The lab investigates the pathophysiology of renal diseases, including IgA nephropathy, and explores the impact of vascular access types on patient outcomes in hemodialysis. A key focus is on identifying predictors of mortality and cognitive dysfunction in critically ill patients, particularly in the post-cardiac arrest population.

15INTRODUCTION: Severe hyperkalemia, with potassium (K+) levels ≥ 6.5 mEq/L, is a potentially life-threatening electrolyte imbalance. For prompt and effective treatment, it is important to know its risk factors, clinical manifestations, and predictors of mortality. METHODS: An observational cohort study was performed at 2 medical centers. A total of 923 consecutive Korean patients were analyzed. All were 19 years of age or older and were hospitalized with severe hyperkalemia between August 2007 an
Diffuse, sudden ischemic-hypoxic injury caused by cardiac arrest (CA) does not preferentially damage memory systems. Subacute or stepwise hypoxic or excitotoxic injury may cause isolated hippocampal injury and amnesia. The common pattern of impairment in the postacute phase after CA is a combination of memory, subtle motor, and variable executive deficits.
The hippocampal formation has been one of the most extensively studied cortical regions in rats, yet little is known about the anatomical connections of the hippocampus in primates, especially humans. With the use of an antibody against the calcium-binding protein, calbindin-D28K, in normal autopsy tissue and the neuronal tracers biocytin or biotinylated dextrans in in vitro slice preparations from tissue removed during surgery for intractable epilepsy, we examined the human hippocampal mossy fi
Background Although arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred vascular access for hemodialysis (HD), the association between vascular access types and quality of life is not well-known. We investigated the relationships between HD vascular access types and all-cause mortality, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the degree of depression in a large prospective cohort. Methods A total of 1461 patients who newly initiated HD were included. The initial vascular access types were classified
BACKGROUND: IgA nephropathy is one of the most common forms of primary glomerulonephritis in adults. Its pathogenesis is complex. The nature of infiltrating and proliferating cells and of cellular mediators could contribute to the progression of IgA nephropathy towards end-stage renal failure. METHODS: To evaluate this hypothesis, we attempted to quantify the magnitude of intrarenal gene expression of various cytokines (IL-1 beta, TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-15, IL-2, IFN-gamma, IL-10) and chemokines (I
These survivors of OHCA had persistent long-term cognitive deficits. Quality of life at one year after OHCA was reduced compared to cardiac controls. Coma duration and memory impairment at three months were harbingers of long term reduced quality of life.
TNF superfamily member 13 (TNFSF13) has been identified as a susceptibility gene for IgA nephropathy in recent genetic studies. However, the role of TNFSF13 in the progression of IgA nephropathy remains unresolved. We evaluated two genetic polymorphisms (rs11552708 and rs3803800) and plasma levels of TNFSF13 in 637 patients with IgA nephropathy, and determined the risk of ESRD according to theses variable. Neither of the examined genetic polymorphisms associated with a clinical outcome of IgA ne
The merozoite surface protein-1 (MSP-1) of Plasmodium vivax exhibits great antigenic diversity among different isolates of this parasite. This antigen is a useful genetic marker for studying the polymorphism of natural P. vivax parasite populations. One or more of these populations has been responsible for resurgent malaria now occurring in Korea. This paper reports the analysis of a highly polymorphic region between interspecies conserved blocks 5 and 6 of the MSP-1 gene, using the polymerase c
We investigated the anatomical connections of the pyramidal neurons located within the hilar region of the dentate gyrus of the human hippocampus, neurons which do not have a rodent equivalent. The myeloarchitectural patterns of the human hippocampus indicated the presence of a distinct fiber pathway, the endfolial fiber pathway, in the stratum oriens of the hilus and field CA3. By using the fluorescent lipophilic dye DiI in formalin-fixed human hippocampal tissue, we demonstrated that this is a
BACKGROUND: We attempted to describe the clinical features and determine the factors associated with renal survival in idiopathic membranous nephropathy (iMN) patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS) and to determine the factors associated with spontaneous complete remission (sCR) and progression to NS in iMN patients with subnephrotic proteinuria. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 166 iMN patients with NS and 65 patients with subnephrotic proteinuria. The primary end point was a doubling
