Professor Chung Bum-Jin's research lab specializes in nuclear safety and thermal-hydraulic phenomena in severe nuclear accidents, with a focus on heat transfer and fluid dynamics in reactor components. The lab conducts experimental and analytical studies on natural convection in molten corium pools, particularly the thermal loading on the reactor vessel lower head. Using electrochemical analogy techniques, such as CuSO4–H2SO4 systems, the lab investigates mass transfer to simulate heat transfer under severe accident conditions. Their work contributes to improving the safety assessment and design of advanced nuclear reactors.

We investigated the heat load imposed on the lower head of a reactor vessel by the natural convection of the oxide pool in a severe accident. Mass transfer experiments using a CuSO4–H2SO4 electroplating system were performed based on the analogy between heat and mass transfer.
