Professor Denton Chad’s research lab focuses on the intersections of nationalism, propaganda, and cultural memory in 20th-century Europe, with a particular emphasis on Franco-German relations, wartime economic policies, and the role of cultural production under authoritarian regimes. The lab investigates how material resources—such as metals and cultural artifacts—were mobilized for war, and how humor, literature, and tourism were weaponized or repurposed for political and ideological ends. Key research directions include the history of forced requisitions, the politics of cultural resistance and collaboration, and the construction of national identity through literature and media during and after World War II.

This article traces how Germany requisitioned, melted down, and transformed metal objects into munitions in occupied Europe from the First World War through the Second World War in order to show the interstices of Franco-German economic collaboration. During the First World War, Germany was effectively cut off from foreign imports of raw materials by the Allied blockade. The German military compensated for this loss through systematic requisitions in homes, businesses, and places of worship in o

“General Humanity of an Old and Civilized People”?: The Italian Occupation Zone in France and the Protection of the Jews

“German” Freedom: A Literary and Historical Explanation for the Virality of Nikolaus Becker’s “Rheinlied”

Why, in the fall of 1840, did a banal poem written by an undistinguished amateur poet in the Rhineland become wildly popular - or in twenty-first century parlance - “go viral”? In answering that question, this article traces how Nikolaus Becker’s “Rheinlied” temporarily gave the illusion of German unity through the anti-French sentiment provoked by the Rhine Crisis of 1840. Historical contextualization through primary archival material in the press of the time, as well as a close formal literary

Old Paris and a New Europe in Interwar German Guidebooks and their Parodies

This article argues that the ubiquitous presence of American tourists in interwar Paris was central for the articulation of a new, European identity on the ruins of war-torn Europe by German-speaking intellectuals. It does so by analyzing two different sets of underutilized sources, the Baedeker guidebooks to Paris used by American, German, and Austrian tourists alike as well as two German-language parodies of that guidebook, Arthur Holitscher’s Der Narrenbaedeker (1925) and Hans von Wedderkop’s

More Valuable than Gold: Korean Tungsten and the Japanese War Economy, 1910 to 1945

A central component of the Japanese government’s foreign policy after the First World War was its desire to control and secure access to strategic minerals necessary for munitions production. Two-thirds of the world supply of these strategic minerals—including metals like copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tungsten and zinc—was primarily under the commercial control of American and British interests. American geologists and foreign policy experts assumed that Anglo-American sanctions combined wit

“Double-Think” in Vichy France: Translating German Literature in the Lyonnais Literary Review Confluences, 1941-1943

During the Second World War, why did editors of literary reviews in Vichy France—including some associated with the French Resistance—publish translations of German literature? Through an analysis of the French translations of German texts appearing in the Lyonnais journal Confluences from July 1941 to December 1943, this article shows how a skillful editor could weaponize translations by choosing not only what authors to publish but also where to begin or end an excerpt to suggest a dissident p
