Professor Do Young Kim's research lab specializes in liver disease research, with a primary focus on noninvasive liver fibrosis assessment, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance, and the role of viral hepatitis in oncogenesis. The lab investigates advanced elastography techniques such as liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and the use of biomarkers like PIVKA-II and AFP to improve early detection and risk stratification of HCC. Current research also explores metabolic influences on liver health, including the neuroprotective and mitochondrial effects of ketones in liver-related pathologies. The lab aims to develop tailored, evidence-based surveillance and prophylactic strategies for patients with chronic liver disease, particularly in high-burden regions like East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

15LSPS is a reliable, noninvasive method for detection of HEVs. Patients with LSPS<3.5 may avoid endoscopy safely, whereas those with LSPS>5.5 should be considered for appropriate prophylactic treatments.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most frequently occurring malignancies and has a high mortality rate. The incidence of HCC differs greatly according to the geographic area. East and Southeast Asia, as well as middle and West Africas have the highest prevalence of HCC. The risk factors for developing HCC are well known and include cirrhosis, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, alcohol consumption, smoking, diabetes, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.
LS values at CVR are useful for predicting forthcoming LRE development. Thus, in the era of potent antiviral therapy, tailored surveillance strategies might be established based upon LS values at CVR.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to assess the usefulness of prothrombin induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) in monitoring of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after curative resection.
