Professor Dokyeong Song's research lab focuses on the molecular and metabolic mechanisms underlying obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and related metabolic disorders. The lab investigates genetic factors such as FTO gene variants, epigenetic regulators like miRNA-6767-5p, and adipose tissue biology—including epicardial adipose tissue and primary cilia function—in the context of insulin resistance, hormonal dysregulation, and body weight homeostasis. A key emphasis is on identifying novel biomarkers, such as anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), for early diagnosis and personalized management of PCOS and metabolic syndrome in young women. The lab integrates clinical imaging, genetic analysis, and hormonal profiling to explore the pathophysiology of metabolic and reproductive diseases.

Serum miRNA-6767-5p may be a novel candidate as a molecular biomarker in the diagnosis of PCOS and may participate in the development of the metabolic and reproductive traits of PCOS.
Women with PCOS and normal glucose tolerance showed higher IR than controls matched for age, BMI, and β-cell function. β-cell function was increased in women with PCOS when compared to the matched controls, but not when the lean subjects were compared to the matched controls separately. Therefore, early evaluation of IR in women with PCOS and normal glucose tolerance may be needed.
