Professor Dong-eok Kang's research lab specializes in actuarial science, pension fund sustainability, and dynamic financial modeling. The lab focuses on analyzing the long-term viability of national pension systems under economic uncertainty, with particular emphasis on the impact of business cycles, asset returns, and risk management strategies. Using econometric techniques such as Vector Autoregression and stochastic simulations, the lab investigates how changes in investment return expectations and economic fluctuations influence fund depletion timelines. The research aims to inform policy decisions for sustainable public pension systems in aging societies.

2Abstract The Korean National Pension Fund is projected to be depleted within thirty years. This paper examines whether short-term economic fluctuations affect fund projections and whether raising the target return can delay fund depletion. Using Vector Auto-Regression analysis, we find that contributions and returns are highly responsive to short-run fluctuations. However, business cycle volatility has a limited effect on fund forecasts. Our simulations suggest that increasing expected returns b
