Professor Dong Il Park's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal diseases, with a focus on endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of colorectal neoplasia, Helicobacter pylori eradication therapies, and inflammatory bowel disease management. The lab investigates advanced endoscopic techniques such as qFIT for early cancer detection, evaluates biosimilar agents like CT-P13 for IBD, and explores probiotic and mucoprotective adjuvants to enhance H. pylori treatment efficacy. Their work emphasizes real-world clinical outcomes, antimicrobial resistance detection, and improving patient care through evidence-based endoscopic and pharmacological strategies.

15The qFIT provides a higher sensitivity for detecting ACRN and cancer than the GT, and has an acceptable specificity that significantly reduces the need for colonoscopic evaluation in the screened population.
BACKGROUND AND AIM: A biosimilar of infliximab, CT-P13 (Remsima®) has the potential to reduce treatment costs and enhance access to biological therapy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. However, long-term clinical data on its use for IBD treatment are currently sparse. We aimed to investigate the long-term efficacy and safety of CT-P13 therapy in a large, real-life IBD cohort. METHODS: A total of 368 IBD patients (227 with Crohn's disease [CD] and 141 with ulcerative colitis [UC]) tr
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recent studies have found that probiotics have anti-Helicobacter pylori (HP) properties. We evaluated the additive effects of (i) Saccharomyces boulardii combined with proton pump inhibitor (PPI)-based triple therapy and (ii) S. boulardii and a mucoprotective agent (DA-9601) coupled with PPI-based triple therapy for HP eradication. METHODS: We recruited 991 HP infected patients and randomized them into one of three groups, (A) PPI-based 7-day triple therapy, (B) the same triple
These results suggest that a diagnosis of high-grade dysplasia in forceps biopsy material should be considered an absolute indication for ESP or EMR.
BACKGROUND: The relationship between obesity and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is controversial. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential roles of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference on GERD in a Korean population. METHODS: A total of 2457 subjects who visited the Kangbuk Samsung Hospital medical screening center for esophagogastroduodenoscopy from September 2004 to April 2005 were enrolled. All participants were given a questionnaire to determine reflux s
BACKGROUND: Assessment of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) clarithromycin resistance has rarely been performed routinely despite an increasing resistance rate. Our aim was to develop and evaluate the use of dual-priming oligonucleotide (DPO)-based multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect point mutations in the 23S rRNA gene responsible for clarithromycin resistance of H. pylori. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Gastric biopsy specimens from 212 untreated patients with dyspepsia were examined by
Our results have demonstrated that the promoter hypermethylation for methylguanine DNA methyltransferase, human Mut L homolog-1, and vimentin in stool samples is a feasible epigenetic marker that is a sensitive, specific, and noninvasive alternative for colorectal cancer screening. This method of screening for colorectal cancer may be useful for patients that decline screening because of fear or inconvenience.
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: A prepackaged low residue one-day diet (breakfast, lunch and dinner) has been recently developed to improve patient tolerance for bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy. The aims of this study were to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of bowel preparation protocols based on a low residue diet and 4L polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution, and to compare these new options with the traditional liquid diet and the PEG 4L lavage. METHODS: A total of 214 patients (mean age
BACKGROUND: The incidence of rectal neuroendocrine tumors (NET) has been increasing since the implementation of the screening colonoscopy. However, very little is known about risk factors associated with rectal NETs. We examined the prevalence of and the risk factors for rectal NETs in a Korean population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on 62,171 Koreans who underwent screening colonoscopy. The clinical characteristics and serum biochemical parameters of subjects with rectal NET
The Asia-Pacific Working Group on Inflammatory Bowel Disease was established in Cebu, Philippines, under the auspices of the Asia-Pacific Association of Gastroenterology with the goal of improving inflammatory bowel disease care in Asia. This consensus is carried out in collaboration with Asian Organization for Crohn's and Colitis. With biologic agents and biosimilars becoming more established, it is necessary to conduct a review on existing literature and establish a consensus on when and how t
BACKGROUND: Helicobacer pylori infection is a major gastric cancer risk factor. Deficient DNA mismatch repair (MMR) caused by H. pylori may underlie microsatellite instability (MSI) in the gastric epithelium and may represent a major mechanism of mutation accumulation in the gastric mucosa during the early stages of H. pylori-associated gastric carcinogenesis. In this study, we examined the expression of DNA MMR protein (hMLH1 and hMSH2) in patients with chronic H. pylori infection before and af
An uncomfortable colonoscopic procedure will be expected in younger, female patients with a history of gynaeco-pelvic surgery.
