Professor Dong Joon Kim's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on natural product pharmacology, drug-induced liver injury (DILI), and spinal regenerative medicine. The lab investigates the antiviral and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of bioactive compounds from traditional medicinal plants, particularly bis-benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, and explores their therapeutic potential against viral infections and chronic diseases. Additionally, the lab is actively involved in clinical research on gastrointestinal microbiota modulation in alcohol use disorders and the development of minimally invasive spinal fusion techniques using biomaterials such as PEEK cages and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2).

15BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To describe the results of transvenous embolizations of cavernous dural arteriovenous fistua (cDAVF) with an emphasis on identifying the incidence, characteristics, and management strategies associated with the complications of transvenous embolization of cDAVFs. METHODS: Fifty-six consecutive patients who were treated by transvenous embolization for cDAVFs were reviewed. The approach routes, angiographic results, complications, and clinical outcome were assessed. RESULTS
The rhBMP-2 clearly up-regulated mRNA expression of chondrogenic components and also stimulated proteoglycan synthesis without expression of osteogenic phenotype. Taken together, this study raise the possibility of rhBMP-2 can be anabolic agent for regenerating matrix of intervertebral disc.
The rate of PEEK cage subsidence after MITLIF was relatively low. End-plate manipulation and cage insertion during MITLIF were not influenced by a small operation window.
