Professor Dong-Joong Kim's research lab specializes in mathematics education, with a focus on innovative pedagogical approaches that integrate creativity, character education, and narrative-based learning in mathematics instruction. The lab investigates how multimedia design, including screen size and visual annotations, influences second language vocabulary acquisition, and explores the use of commognitive discourse analysis to understand students’ mathematical thinking. Additionally, the lab examines textbook design and curriculum development, particularly the integration of storytelling in mathematics textbooks to enhance cognitive engagement and learning outcomes.

Effect of screen size on multimedia vocabulary learning
Daesang Kim, Dong‐Joong Kim
SJR Q1British Journal of Educational Technology

Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of three different screen sizes (small, medium and large) and two types of multimedia instruction (text only and text with pictorial annotation) on vocabulary learning. One hundred thirty‐five Korean middle school students learning English as a foreign language were randomly distributed into six groups and were given a pretest, a self‐study multimedia instruction, a posttest and a retention test online. The pretest, posttest and

Dong‐Joong Kim, Sung-Chul Bae, Sang‐Ho Choi, Hee-jeong Kim, Woong Lim
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

This study examines preservice teachers’ perspectives of creativity and character education in mathematics through a university-based teacher education program. We developed a curricular unit on creative character education in a mathematics methods course and investigated participants’ (n = 56) emerging perspectives of teaching creativity and character by the integration of content and process in mathematics. Data were collected through pre- and post-questionnaires and transcribed course discuss

Sfard'S Commognitive Framework As A Method Of Discourse Analysis In Mathematics
Dong‐Joong Kim, Sang-Ho Choi, Woong Lim
Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)OA

This paper discusses Sfard’s commognitive approach and provides an empirical study as an example to illustrate the theory as method. Traditionally, research in mathematics education focused on the acquisition of mathematical knowledge and the didactic process of knowledge transfer. Through attending to a distinctive form of language in mathematics, as well as mathematics as a discursive subject, alternative views of making meaning in mathematics have emerged; these views are therefore “critical,

Trends of Mathematics Education Research and Mixed Methods - Focusing on Domestic Mathematics Education Journals for the Last 10 years
Dong‐Joong Kim, Sung-Chul Bae, Won Kim, Da-Hee Lee, Sang-Ho Choi
Communications of Mathematical Education

The purpose of research is to analyze research trends and methods in a total of 709 studies published in five domestic mathematics education journals issued by Korea Citation Index (KCI) for the last 10 years (2003-2013) and strands in stages of research methods among mixed methods studies. As a result, the majority of articles in the five journals used either qualitative or quantitative methods and mixed methods research was less than 10 % of the total number of studies. The majority of mixed m

Two Different Epistemologies about Limit Concepts
Dong‐Joong Kim, Kang Hyangim, Hyun-Joo Lee
International Education StudiesOA

The purpose of this study is to investigate characteristics of limit concepts through the simultaneous use of historical and experimental epistemologies. Based on a historical epistemology which is an investigation of historical developments in a mathematical concept raised in the history of mathematics, four different developments of limit concepts were considered. Through an experimental epistemology which is an analysis of students’ different stages in the development of their understanding o

SJR Q2MathematicsOA

The purpose of this study is to investigate secondary teacher candidates’ experience of mathematical modeling task design. In the study, 54 teacher candidates in a university-based teacher education program created modeling tasks and scoring rubrics. Next, the participants pilot-tested the tasks with students and had the opportunity to revise the original tasks and rubrics based on student responses. The data included participants’ statements, in which they described and reflected on the design
