Professor Dong Kee Jang's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases, with a strong focus on advanced medical imaging, endoscopic interventions, and metabolic liver diseases. The lab investigates the diagnostic and prognostic value of imaging modalities such as MRI and MDCT in pancreaticobiliary disorders, evaluates outcomes and complications of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and explores the impact of lifestyle factors like physical activity on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The lab also examines the epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance patterns in biliary tract infections, particularly extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing organisms (ESBL-PO), using large-scale national health databases.

Patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) may have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Few studies have dealt with the association between AP and the risk of CVD in diabetic patients. This study aimed to investigate the risk of CVD and mortality in patients with diabetes and AP history by analyzing a large-scale national claims database in Korea. Data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database was analyzed. A total of 2,746,988 participants with type 2 diabetes mellitu
BACKGROUND: Although endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a pivotal procedure for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of pancreatobiliary diseases, it has been known that the risk of procedure-related adverse events (AEs) is significant. OBJECTIVE: We conducted this nationwide cohort study since there have been few reports on the real-world data regarding ERCP-related AEs. METHODS: Patients who underwent ERCP were identified between 2012 and 2015 using Health Insurance R
The aim of the current study was to examine the independent association of physical activity with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and aminotransferases while adjusting for obesity and diet. Cross-sectional data from 32,391 participants aged ≥ 20 years in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) was analyzed by logistic regression models and general linear models. Physical activity was assessed from the questionnaire by health-enhancing physical activity (HEP
BACKGROUND: Although temporary endoscopic biliary stenting is considered effective for difficult common bile duct (CBD) stones, few studies have investigated the optimal conditions for complete stone clearance at the second endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) after temporary biliary stenting. We aimed to evaluate factors associated with complete clearance. METHODS: Patients with difficult CBD stones (a large [≥ 20 mm] or multiple [≥ 3 sized ≥ 15 mm] CBD stones) were retrospecti
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Biliary tract infections (BTIs) are a major cause of bacteremia. The prevalence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens in BTI patients is reported to be increasing. We used a nationwide database to evaluate the prevalence of, and risk factors for, BTIs caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing organisms (ESBL-PO) in Korea. METHODS: Patients with a BTI diagnosis, an admission history, a history of a BTI-related procedure, and antibiotic use for ≥ 4 days between 2007 and
A watchful waiting strategy could be feasible for some patients with MD/mixed IPMNs, particularly those with a main pancreatic duct of less than 10 mm and without diabetes.
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided interventions have evolved rapidly in recent years, with dedicated metal stents playing a crucial role in this process. Specifically, the invention of biflanged short metal-covered stents, including lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS), and modifications in a variety of tubular self-expandable metal stents (SEMS), have led to innovations in EUS-guided interventions. LAMS or non-LAMS stents are commonly used in the EUS-guided drainage of pancreatic fluid collectio
AIM: Liver cirrhosis and features of muscle or adipose tissues may affect the severity of acute pancreatitis (AP). We aimed to evaluate the impact of body composition parameters and liver cirrhosis on the severity of AP in patients with alcohol-induced AP (AAP). METHODS: Patients with presumed AAP who underwent CT within one week after admission were retrospectively enrolled. L3 sectional areas of abdominal fat and muscle, and mean muscle attenuations (MMAs) were quantified. The presence of live
BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that electroacupuncture (EA) reduces the severity of acute pancreatitis. However, the effect of EA for pain relief in patients with acute pancreatitis has not been evaluated yet. The purpose of this study was to prove the efficacy of EA for pain relief in patients with acute pancreatitis compared with conventional treatment. METHODS: This study is a randomized, controlled, three-arm, parallel-group, multi-center trial. Patients diagnosed with acute pancrea
This study aimed to identify the lifestyle and comorbidity factors associated with sedentary behavior by diabetes mellitus (DM) status. A total of 17,832 participants aged ≥50 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included. Factors associated with long sedentary time (LST, ≥420 min/day) in individuals with and without DM (non-DM) were assessed. Among individuals with DM, LST was independently associated with excessive alcohol drinking (OR, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.02-
BACKGROUND/AIMS: It has been demonstrated that cryptogenic pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is associated with colonic mucosal defect, especially colorectal cancer (CRC). Therefore, the screening of CRC in patients with cryptogenic PLA is important. This study was to investigate whether computed tomographic colonography (CTC) has value as a follow-up modality as well as CRC screening tool in patients with PLA. METHODS: A retrospective evaluation of 109 patients with cryptogenic PLA who underwent CTC
