Professor Dong Sup Yoon's research lab specializes in surgical critical care and hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery, with a strong focus on improving the diagnosis, severity assessment, and management of acute cholecystitis and cholangitis. The lab is at the forefront of developing and validating clinical guidelines, such as the Tokyo Guidelines (TG13 and TG18), which standardize diagnostic criteria and treatment algorithms based on evidence and big data. Their work emphasizes risk stratification using tools like the Charlson Comorbidity Index and ASA-PS, and investigates predictive factors for postoperative complications such as pancreatic fistula. The lab also explores prognostic factors in metastatic disease, particularly adrenal metastasis and lymph node involvement in gastrointestinal cancers.

15Abstract The Tokyo Guidelines 2013 (TG13) for acute cholangitis and cholecystitis were globally disseminated and various clinical studies about the management of acute cholecystitis were reported by many researchers and clinicians from all over the world. The 1 st edition of the Tokyo Guidelines 2007 ( TG 07) was revised in 2013. According to that revision, the TG 13 diagnostic criteria of acute cholecystitis provided better specificity and higher diagnostic accuracy. Thorough our literature sea
PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze the effect of each therapeutic modality to clarify the treatment strategy for adrenal metastases from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Adrenal metastasis from HCC was observed in 45 patients. Fifteen patients who were determined to have multi-organ metastasis including the adrenal glands were excluded, and the remaining 30 patients were reviewed. RESULTS: The location of adrenal metastasis was right side, left side, and both in 17, 9, and 4 patients,
BACKGROUND: Carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater has a relatively higher resection rate, lower recurrence rate, and more favorable prognosis than other malignant tumors of the periampullary region. Because of the relative low incidence of carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater, there have been few reports on the patterns and risk factors of recurrence after curative resection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the patterns and risk factors of recurrence after curative resection of ampulla of Vater c
VFA is a better indicator for the development of pancreatic fistula after PD than BMI. High VFA (≥100 cm(2)) is a risk factor for developing a pancreatic fistula after PD.
BACKGROUND: Chyle leakage is a rare complication of pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), and its association with pancreatic fistula has not been established. The aim of this study was to (1) evaluate the incidence, management, and risk factors of chyle leakage after PD; (2) determine if there is a relation between chyle leakage and diagnosis of pancreatic fistula; and (3) predict chyle leakage with drainage volume early. METHODS: A total of 222 patients underwent PD or pylorus-preserving PD. We used t
In order to classify the hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) which had diverse clinicopathologic characteristics, we divided HCCs into two groups according to the expression of biliary antigen on the basis of the hypothesis that the hepatocyte and biliary epithelial cell originate from the same precursor cell, and then we investigated the clinical and pathologic characteristics in the two groups. Forty HCC cases with no preoperative treatment and at least two-year follow-up data were selected among
In the development of a cancer, unlimited cell proliferation has been believed to play an important role. In addition, a programmed cell death called apoptosis, which is regulated by several oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, has been suggested to be another important different pathway of carcinogenesis. Recently, several reports on cell proliferation capacity and apoptosis in the development of human liver disease have been published, but the cell proliferation index and its relationship bet
BACKGROUND: Biliary papillomatosis (BP) is a rare disease characterized by multiple papillary lesions of variable distribution and extent in the intra and extrahepatic bile duct. Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy (HPD) can be indicated for the resection of diffuse intra and extrahepatic BP that extended to the distal bile duct and ampullary region. The mortality rate for HPD has recently decreased but HPD still has a high morbidity rate. In this study, we present a safe procedure for concomitant intra
