Professor Dum-Sik Hwang's research lab specializes in biogeochemistry and marine organic matter cycling, with a focus on understanding the sources, transformations, and fate of particulate and sedimentary organic carbon in marine environments. The lab investigates the isotopic signatures (particularly radiocarbon and stable carbon isotopes) of organic matter fractions to trace the origins and diagenetic processing of oceanic particulate organic carbon, especially the uncharacterized or acid-insoluble fraction. Key research directions include the role of lithogenic particles in transporting aged organic carbon, the dynamics of carbon export in polar and deep-sea systems such as the Arctic and Southern Oceans, and the interplay between biological productivity, particle flux, and carbon sequestration. The lab also explores the fundamental properties of biomolecules, such as DNA, through nanoscale electrical transport measurements, bridging marine biogeochemistry with molecular-scale physical chemistry.

We report electrical transport through 60 base pairs of poly(dG)-poly(dC) DNA molecules. The DNA solution is dropped on two metal electrodes with the gap of 20 nm. The current–voltage characteristics measured between the electrodes exhibits clear staircases, which are reproducible over repeated measurements. The size of the observed staircases is consistent with the energy gap obtained from a tight binding calculation.

We demonstrate the effect of Ti thickness on the contact resistance between GaN nanowires and Ti∕Au electrodes. We have carried out systematic characterization of many GaN nanowires contacted by various Ti∕Au electrodes.
