研究室紹介

Professor Euiseok Kim's research lab specializes in interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of neuroscience, advanced computing, and sustainable innovation. The lab investigates neural mechanisms underlying chronic itch and sensory processing, particularly focusing on spinal inhibitory circuits and their role in sensory gating. In parallel, the lab explores technological innovation in computing architectures—especially CXL-based memory disaggregation and near-data processing—to enhance performance and energy efficiency in data-intensive applications. Additionally, the lab examines the role of education and technology transfer in driving national innovation systems and sustainable development, particularly in the context of digital transformation and high-tech industrial convergence.

Light mechanical stimulation of hairy skin can induce a form of itch known as mechanical itch. This itch sensation is normally suppressed by inputs from mechanoreceptors; however, in many forms of chronic itch, including alloknesis, this gating mechanism is lost. Here we demonstrate that a population of spinal inhibitory interneurons that are defined by the expression of neuropeptide Y::Cre (NPY::Cre) act to gate mechanical itch. Mice in which dorsal NPY::Cre-derived neurons are selectively abla

Sustainability in Higher Education: Digital Transformation of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Its Impact on Open Knowledge
Temitayo Shenkoya, Euiseok Kim
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

Education is important for sustainable development and drives innovation within national innovation systems. As developed economies move to matured stages of the fourth industrial revolution, the quality of education needs to keep up with the required technological changes brought about by the digital transformation created by these technologies. However, studies on the impact of the digital transformation of the higher education system and its effect on sustainability are few. This study bridge

Strategy transformation under technological convergence: evidence from the printed electronics industry
Yongrae Cho, Euiseok Kim, Wonjoon Kim
SJR Q2International Journal of Technology Management

Radical technological innovations have transformed competition in high–tech markets. One result of innovation is technological convergence, whereby different technologies are integrated and businesses become more complex, thus blurring industry boundaries. We examine the evolution of firms' strategic positions under technological convergence. Specifically, we analyse the printed electronics industry using patent–centric network indexes and reveal technological intensity using firm–based networks

CXL interface is the up-to-date technology that enables effective memory expansion by providing a memory-sharing protocol in configuring heterogeneous devices. However, its limited physical bandwidth can be a significant bottleneck for emerging data-intensive applications. In this work, we propose a novel CXL-based memory disaggregation architecture with a real-world prototype demonstration, which overcomes the bandwidth limitation of the CXL interface using near-data processing. The experimenta

Balancing energy use against video quality in mobile devices
Euiseok Kim, Hyunmi Jeong, Jinwoo Yang, Minseok Song
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics

It is now common to access mobile video services through various Internet-connectable devices such as game stations, smartphones and tablets. This paper proposes a new energy management scheme for mobile devices by making use of the temporal scalability available in scalable video coding (SVC) techniques. The proposed scheme determines a quality index for each video segment, based on the pixel-wise difference between the luminance planes of consecutive frames at each frame-rate, and predicts the

The impact of technology transfer / policies on the economic catch-up of the Korean National Innovation System and its implications for Nigeria
Temitayo Shenkoya, Euiseok Kim
SJR Q3African Journal of Science Technology Innovation and Development

Previous studies have shown that technology transfer is essential for innovation and knowledge diffusion. However, without appropriate policies, technology transfer cannot be successful. This research studied technology transfer and its policies in Korea with the aim to determine whether it contributed to the catching-up of the Korean economy while seeking to prove Schumpeter’s theory of innovation. In this study, a mixed methodology that involved the use of a systematic review of literature and

Performance optimization of synchronous control units for datapaths with variable delay arithmetic units
Euiseok Kim, Dong-Ik Lee, Hiroshi Saitō, Hiroshi Nakamura, Jeong‐Gun Lee, Takashi Nanya

Nowadays, variable delay arithmetic units have been used for implementing a datapath of a target system in pursuit of performance improvement. However, adoption of variable delay arithmetic units requires modification of a typical synchronous control unit design methodology. A telescopic arithmetic unit based methodology is one of representative methodologies to design synchronous control units for variable delay datapaths. In this paper, we propose two optimization methods for it. Proposed opti

A Study for the Innovativeness of Blockchain
Euiseok Kim
The e-Business Studies

After Satoshi Nakamoto published ‘Bitcoin: A peer-to-peer electronic cash system’ in 2008, Blockchain has been GPT (General Purpose Technologies) that affect the whole cycle of the 4th Industrial Revolution. This study attempted to identify the innovativeness of Blockchain. Because of Blockchain’s ambidextrous characteristics, Blockchain has two kinds of innovativeness, technological innovation by physical technology and social innovation by social technology. Thus, this study will be useful to

Automatic distributed asynchronous control circuit generation from data flow graph for asynchronous high-level synthesis
Euiseok Kim, Jeong‐Gun Lee, Dong-Ik Lee

As an asynchronous design style becomes popular, the request for asynchronous high-level synthesis (AHLS) tools is increasing continuously. In this paper, a method to derive distributed asynchronous control circuits in an automatic and systematic manner is suggested as a part of an AHLS tool. In order to acquire control circuits with competent quality, a process-oriented method is proposed. Experimental results show that the suggested method is efficient in the aspects of area and performance of

Analytical Modeling and Excimer Laser Micromachining of Microchannel for Medical Devices Development
Euiseok Kim, Roger J. Narayan, Yuan‐Shin Lee

In this paper, an analytical modeling of microchannel design and manufacturing with excimer laser micromachining is presented for medical devices development. Micro/Nano fabrication methods have made possible the creation of extremely tiny structures and systems which cannot be generated using traditional manufacturing processes. Current fabrication methods of microchannels generally require serial fabrication processes including a masking process. To overcome the drawbacks of current methods, w
