Professor Eun Ah Shin's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer progression, particularly in breast and prostate cancers, with an emphasis on tumor microenvironment interactions, metabolic reprogramming, and epigenetic regulation. The lab investigates how cancer cells rewire their metabolism—especially glucose and arachidonic acid pathways—and how these changes influence metastasis, especially to bone. They also explore epigenetic regulators like DNMT1 and non-coding RNAs as potential therapeutic targets to overcome treatment resistance. A key direction involves identifying natural compounds that sensitize cancer cells to apoptosis-inducing agents such as TRAIL.

BACKGROUND: We assessed the expression of methylation-related proteins 5-meC, DNMT1, and ISL-1 in breast cancer and evaluated their relationship to clinicopathological factors. METHODS: Immunohistochemical staining for ER, PR, HER-2, Ki-67, 5-meC, DNMT1, and ISL-1 were performed on 348 breast cancer samples in tissue microarray. Samples were subgrouped into luminal A, luminal B, HER-2, or triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) according to immunohistochemical staining for ER, PR, HER-2, and Ki-67.
Arachidonic acid (AA) is generated via Rac-mediated phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activation in response to growth factors and cytokines and is implicated in cell growth and gene expression.
