研究室紹介
Professor Eun Hwa Lee's research lab focuses on biomedical and environmental catalysis, with a strong emphasis on understanding host-microbe interactions in plant-mycorrhizal symbiosis, improving early diagnosis of infection and sepsis through inflammatory biomarkers, and developing advanced catalysts for sustainable biofuel production. The lab integrates clinical microbiology, immunology, and materials science to address critical health and environmental challenges, including bloodstream infections in critical care, HIV-associated nontuberculous mycobacterial diseases, and the catalytic conversion of biomass into valuable chemicals. Their work bridges fundamental research with translational applications in infectious disease management and renewable energy technologies.

15Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have mutualistic relationships with more than 80% of terrestrial plant species. This symbiotic relationship is ancient and would have had important roles in establishment of plants on land. Despite their abundance and wide range of relationship with plant species, AMF have shown low species diversity. However, molecular studies have suggested that diversity of these fungi may be much higher, and genetic variation of AMF is very high within a species and even wi
C-reactive protein (CRP) or procalcitonin (PCT) alone has limitations in the early detection of infection or inflammation due to shortcomings in specificity and varied cut-off values. Recently, interleukin (IL)-6 has been assessed, but it is not known to what extent the three values are homogeneous in reality. This retrospective study was conducted with two large datasets (discrepancy set with results within 24 h of admission [7149 patients] and follow-up set until 2 weeks of hospital stay [5261
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) provides hemodynamic and oxygenation support to critically ill patients. Due to multiple catheter cannulations, patients on ECMO are vulnerable to bloodstream infections (BSIs). We aimed to investigate the incidence, clinical characteristics, risk factors, and microorganisms associated with BSIs during ECMO. This single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted between January 2015 and May 2021. Patients aged 18 years or older with an ECMO duratio
With the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) disease has declined. However, NTM diseases still occur in people living with HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) (PLWHA). We analysed the clinical and microbiological features of NTM diseases in PLWHA in South Korea. PLWHA who were diagnosed with NTM diseases between January 2000 and March 2021 were retrospectively enroll
Various SBA-15-based catalysts, Si-SBA-15, Pt/Si-SBA-15, Al-SBA-15, and Pt/Al-SBA-15, were applied to the catalytic pyrolysis of miscanthus. Pt nanoparticles with three different sizes, 1.7 nm, 2.9 nm, and 7.1 nm, were used to synthesize Pt/Si-SBA-15 and Pt/Al-SBA-15. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was used for the pyrolysis experiments. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns, transmittance electron microscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption, and Brunaure-Emmett
BACKGRUOUND: The mortality of sepsis without direct drugs is high. The association between prediabetes, based on a single fasting glucose (FG), or long-term type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and sepsis remains unclear. METHODS: Of the adults aged ≥20 years who were included in the National Health Screening Program (NHSP) in 2009, 40% were randomly sampled. After excluding patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, with missing information, and who were diagnosed with sepsis during the wash-out (betwe
BACKGROUND: Trichosporon is an emerging yeast that causes invasive infections in immunocompromised patients experiencing prolonged hospitalisation, indwelling venous catheters and neutropenia. METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort study analysed invasive Trichosporon infections (ITIs) occurring between January 2005 and December 2022 at three tertiary hospitals and compared the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of ITIs caused by Trichosporon asahii and non-T. asahii spp.
BACKGROUND: Sepsis remains a growing global health concern with soaring mortality and no direct anti-sepsis drug. Although smoking has distinct deleterious effects on chronic inflammatory illnesses and can impair immune function, a comprehensive analysis of the connection between sepsis and smoking is lacking. METHODS: This large-scale longitudinal cohort study retrospectively assessed adults aged ≥ 20 years who underwent national health checkups under the Korean National Health Insurance Servic
PEKIs and their weights can be utilized for impartial evaluation and MBO for hospital nurses. Further research to verify PEKIs would lead to successful implementation of MBO.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is an adrenal steroid converted to potent androgens. This study aimed to discover the association between serum DHEA levels and immunologic response in people with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). We enrolled patients aged ≥ 18 years who were treated with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). We measured CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell counts, HIV-RNA titres, and serum DHEA levels. We assigned each patient to a good- or poor-responder group depending on their CD4+ T-cell counts at study
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection causes chronic inflammation in affected individuals. Chronic inflammation may hinder immunological recovery. Treatment with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) is insufficient to reduce inflammation. Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is an inflammatory marker associated with cardiovascular disease, malignancy, and acute infection. This study evaluated the usefulness of serum PTX3 levels in measuring inflammation levels, which may be associated with the probabi
