Professor Eun-mi Kim's research lab focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with an emphasis on epidemiological trends, disease progression, and survival analysis using national health insurance data. The lab also investigates regenerative medicine approaches, including the differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into insulin-producing cells for type 1 diabetes treatment. Additionally, the lab explores the links between neurological and musculoskeletal disorders, such as the association between osteoporosis and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), as well as occupational risk factors for conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome and work-related musculoskeletal diseases. These studies integrate population-based data with translational research to identify novel therapeutic targets and public health strategies.

The linear relationship between log age and log incidence is consistent with a multistage model of disease, with slope estimated suggesting that 6 steps were required in Japanese and Australian patients with ALS while 5 steps were needed in South Korean patients. Identification of these steps could identify novel therapeutic strategies.
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is caused by autoimmune disease that leads to the destruction of pancreatic β-cells. Transplantation of cadaveric pancreatic organs or pancreatic islets can restore normal physiology.
