研究室紹介
Professor Eun Youn Roh's research lab focuses on regenerative medicine and translational biomedical research, with a strong emphasis on intervertebral disc degeneration, cord blood banking, and metabolic and cardiovascular disease biomarkers. The lab investigates gene therapy and biological interventions for discogenic lower back pain, explores human leukocyte antigen (HLA) diversity in Korean cord blood for transplantation applications, and examines the clinical associations of biomarkers such as CEA and HbA1c in metabolic disorders. The lab also contributes to public health by studying dyslipidemia trends and donor awareness in high-potential populations, bridging basic science with clinical and population health applications.

15Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration can cause chronic lower back pain (LBP), leading to disability. Despite significant advances in the treatment of discogenic LBP, the limitations of current treatments have sparked interest in biological approaches, including growth factor and stem cell injection, as new treatment options for patients with chronic LBP due to IVD degeneration (IVDD). Gene therapy represents exciting new possibilities for IVDD treatment, but treatment is still in its infancy.
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) distribution in 7096 Korean cord blood (CB) units preserved at the public CB bank was analyzed by using the polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific oligonucleotide probe (PCR-SSOP) method. A total of 14 HLA-A, 33 HLA-B, 13 HLA-DRB1 alleles and 2470 three-locus haplotypes were identified. The results are generally similar to those from the previous Korean studies, but the frequencies of less frequent haplotypes < 0.1% are more relevant and infrequent haploty
Mediastinal ectopic thyroid is a very rare condition, with few reported cases in the literature and no reported cases in Korea. This report describes an asymptomatic 65-year-old man with a right paratracheal mass compressing the superior vena. Additionally, the epidemiology, clinical manifestation, diagnosis, and management of mediastinal ectopic thyroids are discussed. A mediastinal ectopic thyroid should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all mediastinal masses. Surgical excision i
BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to investigate the association of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in normal, prediabetic, and diabetic subjects. METHODS: A total of 2,911 participants who underwent general health checkups were enrolled and categorized into the normal, prediabetes, and diabetes groups. Demographic, anthropological, and clinical variables were investigated, and correlations with CEA were analyzed. For 28 diabetic subjects with CEA levels above t
Background: Dyslipidemia is a major risk factor of cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the changing trends in the prevalence and management status of dyslipidemia among Korean adults. Methods: The prevalence of dyslipidemia and the rates of awareness, treatment, and control of dyslipidemia were investigated in adults aged ≥20 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Surveys (KNHANES) 1998 to 2010. The updated National Cholesterol Education Program criteria
BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate the knowledge of cord blood (CB) and attitudes toward CB banking among high-potential donors (i.e., well-educated pregnant Koreans) because their voluntary donation is indispensable to the success of unrelated CB transplantation. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Questionnaires examining perspectives on CB were distributed to and completed by 1001 women attending a maternity education program from April to October 2008; 863 women answered that they had
Approximately 10% of individuals do not respond to hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination, i.e. non-responders (NRs). We aimed to investigate the association of interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-12B gene polymorphisms with responsiveness to the HBV vaccine in Korean infants. Among 300 healthy infants (9-12 month), SNPs for the IL-4 gene (rs2243250, rs2070874, and rs2227284) and for the IL-12B gene (rs3213094 and rs17860508) were compared between subgroups in terms of the response to HBV vaccination. The pe
We hypothesize that the different microchimerism frequencies among population and methods are due to differences in detection specificities and subject characteristics. This study provides basic data on fetal-maternal microchimerism that may be useful for future studies on autoimmune disorder and virtual phenotyping in transplantation.
Tuberculosis remains an important public health problem in Koreans. However, very few studies have reported on the genetic factors associated with TB susceptibility in Koreans. The aim of this study was to elucidate the genetic factors associated with susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). We investigated the transporter associated with antigen processing -1 (TAP1) and TAP2 gene polymorphisms in 160 Korean PTB patients (categorized according to extent of lesion and TB medication history
