Professor Eun-Hee Kim's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer development, with a particular emphasis on sex differences in cancer incidence and mortality, the pathogenesis of hematological malignancies such as hairy cell leukemia, and the identification of novel therapeutic strategies for treatment-resistant cancers like glioma. The lab investigates the roles of genetic mutations (e.g., BRAFV600E), dysregulated cell death pathways (including autophagy and apoptosis), and inflammatory mediators (such as COX-2 and prostaglandins) in tumorigenesis. Additionally, the lab explores natural compounds and metal-based agents (e.g., selenite, arsenic trioxide, and eugenol derivatives) as potential anticancer agents, especially in cancers with apoptotic resistance. Their work bridges basic molecular oncology with translational applications, aiming to develop targeted therapies for aggressive and therapy-resistant cancers.

15The incidence and mortality of various cancers are associated with sex-specific disparities. Sex differences in cancer epidemiology are one of the most significant findings. Malignant gliomas are resistant to various proapoptotic therapies, such as radiotherapy and conventional chemotherapy. In this study, we show that selenite is preferentially cytotoxic to various human glioma cells over normal astrocytes via autophagic cell death. Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a chronic lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by somatic BRAFV600E mutations. The current study shows that treatment of tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL)-resistant glioma cells with a combination of TRAIL and subtoxic doses of arsenic trioxide (As(2)O(3)) induces rapid apoptosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a series of bed exercises on lymphocyte and T-cell subsets in allogeneic bone marrow transplantation patients during hospitalization. Thirty-five patients were randomly assigned, with 18 assigned to an exercise group and 17 to a control group.
