Professor Eun-Hee Kim's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer development, with a particular emphasis on sex differences in cancer incidence and mortality, the pathogenesis of hematological malignancies such as hairy cell leukemia, and the identification of novel therapeutic strategies for treatment-resistant cancers like glioma. The lab investigates the roles of genetic mutations (e.g., BRAFV600E), dysregulated cell death pathways (including autophagy and apoptosis), and inflammatory mediators (such as COX-2 and prostaglandins) in tumorigenesis. Additionally, the lab explores natural compounds and metal-based agents (e.g., selenite, arsenic trioxide, and eugenol derivatives) as potential anticancer agents, especially in cancers with apoptotic resistance. Their work bridges basic molecular oncology with translational applications, aiming to develop targeted therapies for aggressive and therapy-resistant cancers.

Malignant gliomas are resistant to various proapoptotic therapies, such as radiotherapy and conventional chemotherapy. In this study, we show that selenite is preferentially cytotoxic to various human glioma cells over normal astrocytes via autophagic cell death.
