Professor Eunjin Lee's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying retinal degenerative diseases, particularly retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and achromatopsia (ACHM), with a central emphasis on the role of the unfolded protein response (UPR) and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in photoreceptor homeostasis. The lab investigates key regulators such as activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) and their impact on protein quality control, neuronal survival, and glial responses in retinal degeneration. Using genetically engineered animal models, including P23H-KI and S334ter-line3 rats, the lab explores therapeutic strategies targeting UPR, extracellular matrix remodeling, and neuroprotection. Notably, the lab has uncovered novel links between ATF6 dysfunction and non-ocular phenotypes, such as progressive hearing loss, expanding the understanding of ATF6's systemic roles.
