Professor Eunju Kim's research lab focuses on the intersection of behavioral psychology, neurobiology, and molecular mechanisms underlying mental health disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. The lab investigates psychological factors such as online game addiction, self-control, and narcissism, as well as the role of autonomy and social relatedness in student well-being and academic engagement. At the molecular level, the lab explores the interactions between key regulatory proteins—such as Dyrk1A and ASXL1—and disease-related proteins like alpha-synuclein and PPARs, with implications for Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and metabolic disorders. The lab also examines the therapeutic potential of natural compounds, such as nobiletin, in treating aggressive cancers like triple-negative breast cancer through modulation of nuclear receptors and circadian pathways.

SJR Q1European PsychiatryOA

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the relationship between online game addiction and aggression, self-control, and narcissistic personality traits, which are known as the psychological characteristics linked to "at-risk" populations for online game addiction. METHOD: A total of 1471 online game users (males 82.7%, females 17.3%, mean age 21.30+/-4.96) participated in this study and were asked to complete several self-report measures using an online response method. Questionnaires included

Lewy bodies (LBs) are pathological hallmarks of Parkinson disease (PD) but also occur in Alzheimer disease (AD) and dementia of LBs. Alpha-synuclein, the major component of LBs, is observed in the brain of Down syndrome (DS) patients with AD. Dyrk1A, a dual specificity tyrosine-regulated kinase (Dyrk) family member, is the mammalian ortholog of the Drosophila minibrain (Mnb) gene, essential for normal postembryonic neurogenesis. The Dyrk1A gene resides in the human chromosome 21q22.2 region, whi

Additional Sex Comb-like (ASXL) Proteins 1 and 2 Play Opposite Roles in Adipogenesis via Reciprocal Regulation of Peroxisome Proliferator-activated Receptor γ
Ui‐Hyun Park, Seung Kew Yoon, Taesun Park, Eun Joo Kim, Soo‐Jong Um
SJR Q1Journal of Biological ChemistryOA

Our previous studies have suggested that the mammalian additional sex comb-like 1 protein functions as a coactivator or repressor of retinoic acid receptors in a cell-specific manner. Here, we investigated the roles of additional sex comb-like 1 proteins in regulating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs). In pulldown assays in vitro and in immunoprecipitation assays in vivo, ASXL1 and its paralog, ASXL2, interacted with PPARα and PPARγ. In 3T3-L1 preadipocyte cells, overexpression

ROR activation by Nobiletin enhances antitumor efficacy via suppression of IκB/NF-κB signaling in triple-negative breast cancer

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by poor response to standard therapies and therefore unfavorable clinical outcomes. Better understanding of TNBC and new therapeutic strategies are urgently needed. ROR nuclear receptors are multifunctional transcription factors with important roles in circadian pathways and other processes including immunity and tumorigenesis. Nobiletin (NOB) is a natural compound known to display anticancer effects, and our previous

CD300a and CD300f differentially regulate the MyD88 and TRIF‐mediated TLR signalling pathways through activation of SHP‐1 and/or SHP‐2 in human monocytic cell lines

SJR Q1ImmunologyOA

CD300a, a membrane protein expressed on myeloid lineages and specific subsets of CD4(+) T cells, has been reported to have inhibitory activities in cellular activation. However, the role of CD300a in Toll-like receptor (TLR) -mediated macrophage activation has not been investigated. The human monocytic cell lines THP-1 and U937 were stimulated with various TLR ligands after triggering of CD300a with specific monoclonal antibody. Interestingly, CD300a blocked TLR4-mediated and TLR9-mediated expre

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder and the most common cause of dementia. Various pathogenic mechanisms have been proposed to contribute to disease progression, and recent research provided evidence linking dysregulated circadian rhythms/sleep and energy metabolism with AD. Previously, we found that the natural compound Nobiletin (NOB) can directly activate circadian cellular oscillators to promote metabolic health in disease models and healthy aging in natural
