研究室紹介

Professor Eunyoung Suh's research lab focuses on aging, microbiome dynamics, and health promotion in older adults, with a particular emphasis on gut microbiota in centenarians and their role in longevity. The lab also investigates the interplay between chronic inflammation, metabolic factors like free fatty acids, and skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis. Additionally, the lab explores healthcare professional well-being, particularly oncology nurses’ psychological health, and the integration of simulation-based education in nursing training. These interdisciplinary efforts aim to improve health outcomes across the lifespan through biological, clinical, and educational innovations.

Several studies have attempted to identify factors associated with longevity and maintenance of health in centenarians. In this study, we analyzed and compared the gut microbiota of centenarians in longevity villages with the elderly and adults in the same region and urbanized towns. Fecal samples were collected from centenarians, elderly, and young adults in longevity villages, and the gut microbiota sequences of elderly and young adults in urbanized towns of Korea were obtained from public dat

Staphylococcus aureus Colonization in Acute and Chronic Skin Lesions of Patients with Atopic Dermatitis
박혜영, 양준모, 김조록, 허익수, 서은영, 박지혜, 이동윤, 정미영

Background: Staphylococcus aureus (SA) has peculiar abilities to colonize the skin in atopic dermatitis (AD)patients. Objective: We sought to determine the colonization rates of SA in acute and chronic skin lesions of AD patients, to find any difference in colonization rates according to age and to find the influences of total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and eosinophil counts to the colonization of SA. Methods: We evaluated the total IgE level and eosinophil counts, and cultured SA from the skin lesi

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk of malnutrition and its relationship with depression and perceived health status. Methods: A total number of 154 elderly over 60 years participated in the study through a community elderly center. The risk of malnutrition was measured by NSI (Nutritional Screening Initiative), depression by CES-D, and health status by a self-rated Likert scale. Results: About one fourth (22.7%) of the subjects had a high risk, and 31.2% had a moderat

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate oncology nurses' professional quality of life and its correlations with job satisfaction and job stress in a tertiary hospital in Seoul, South Korea. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was utilized to investigate 210 oncology nurses from various oncology and hemato-oncology units. Professional quality of life (ProQOL), which is conceptualized with three sub-dimensions (compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress), j

A relationship between acne and free fatty acids (FFAs) has been suggested recently. However, the effects of FFAs on sebaceous glands are still largely unknown. At the same time, the role of FFAs during chronic inflammation is well established. Considering that FFAs are also a major component of sebum, it is likely that changes in FFA affect both the synthesis of sebum and the inflammatory response in sebaceous glands. In this study, we examined a hypothesis that FFAs increase the production of

Purpose: Incorporating simulation modalities into nursing education is known to be effective in enhancing education outcomes. Standardizing the nomenclature of simulation modalities and developing a comprehensive conceptual framework for guiding the development of simulation modules are mandated given the prevalence and disorganization of simulation education. This article, thus, was aimed to summarize literature and propose a conceptual framework for structuralizing simulation education in Kore

More than 7,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in South Korea and many of them live long as cancer survivors. To date, no research has investigated Korean women’s coping process with breast cancer. This study thus was aimed to explore and describe the processes of coping with breast cancer among Korea women using a grounded theory methodology. Seventeen women aged between 30 and 63 with breast cancer who underwent cancer treatment in a rural cancer hospital participated in an i

BACKGROUND: Seborrhoeic keratoses (SKs) are very common benign epidermal lesions without malignant potential. Ultraviolet radiation, old age and viruses are well-known risk factors for disease development. However, the pathomechanisms of SK are not fully understood. OBJECTIVES: To detect and characterize the genes that are involved in the pathogenesis of SK. METHODS: We performed a gene expression study using paired lesional and nonlesional skin samples from patients with SK. RESULTS: We identif

Ectopic Expression of Capsicum-Specific Cell Wall Protein Capsicum annuum Senescence-Delaying 1 (CaSD1) Delays Senescence and Induces Trichome Formation in Nicotiana benthamiana

Secreted proteins are known to have multiple roles in plant development, metabolism, and stress response. In a previous study to understand the roles of secreted proteins, Capsicum annuum secreted proteins (CaS) were isolated by yeast secretion trap. Among the secreted proteins, we further characterized Capsicum annuum senescence-de-laying 1 (CaSD1), a gene encoding a novel secreted protein that is present only in the genus Capsicum. The deduced CaSD1 contains multiple repeats of the amino acid

Purpose: To date most research related to patients with breast cancer has discriminately investigated the status within or after the treatment although the patients demand holistic nursing care from the time of diagnosis. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the trajectory of breast cancer diagnosis and patients' experiences in the pre-treatment period. Method: This qualitative study used qualitative thematic analysis. Nineteen Korean women who were diagnosed with breast cancer wit
