Professor Gang Gawaon's research lab specializes in hematological malignancies, with a focus on extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their role in leukemia diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic monitoring. The lab investigates EV-derived biomarkers such as CD53 and CD47 in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), explores microRNA profiles in bone marrow-derived EVs for risk stratification, and examines the impact of chemotherapy agents on hematopoietic stem cell mobilization. Additionally, the lab investigates clinical outcomes in patients with MDS and AML treated with hypomethylating agents, including infection risks and antifungal prophylaxis efficacy.

Extracellular vesicle (EV) proteins from acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines were analyzed using mass spectrometry. The analyses identified 2450 proteins, including 461 differentially expressed proteins (290 upregulated and 171 downregulated). CD53 and CD47 were upregulated and were selected as candidate biomarkers.
