Professor Geon-Hwa Lee's research lab specializes in emerging infectious diseases, with a primary focus on zoonotic and vector-borne viral illnesses such as Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS). The lab investigates the epidemiology, virology, and transmission dynamics of SFTS virus (SFTSV), particularly its spread across East Asia, including South Korea, China, and Japan. Key research directions include viral phylogenetics, identification of reservoir hosts (e.g., *Haemaphysalis longicornis* ticks), and the role of migratory birds in long-distance viral dissemination. The lab also examines the impact of climate change and globalization on the emergence and spread of vector-borne diseases, including the potential for new disease incursions into previously unaffected regions such as Jeju Island.

Our results suggest that mosquito vectors or virus-bearing vectors can transmit from epidemic regions of Southeast Asia to Jeju Island and can survive during colder winter months. Therefore, Jeju Island is no longer safe from vector borne diseases (VBDs) due to the effects of globalization and climate change, and we should immediately monitor regional climate change to identify newly emerging VBDs.
During 2016-2018, we collected 3,193 ticks from rural areas in South Korea to investigate the prevalence of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). We detected SFTSV in ticks at an infection rate (IR) of 11.1%. We noted increases in the human IR associated with the monthly SFTSV IR in ticks.
SFTS patients treated with TPE showed improvements in clinical, laboratory, and virological parameters. These results suggest that TPE would be a therapeutic modality as rescue therapy in patients with rapidly progressing SFTS.

is a causative agent of colitis and secrets enterotoxin (BFT), leading to the disease. Sulfiredoxin (Srx)-1 serves to protect from oxidative damages. Although BFT can generate reactive oxygen species in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), no Srx-1 expression has been reported in ETBF infection. In this study, we explored the effects of ETBF-produced BFT on Srx-1 induction in IECs. Treatment of IECs with BFT resulted in increased expression of Srx-1 in a time-dependent manner. BFT treatment also
