Professor Geung Sik Jung's research lab specializes in the historical development of East Asian legal systems, with a focus on the transmission and adaptation of Chinese legal codes in Korea from the Goryeo to the Joseon dynasties. The lab investigates the evolution of Korean law through comparative legal history, emphasizing institutional reforms, social foundations, and the impact of imperial Chinese legal traditions. Key research directions include the adoption of the Great Ming Code, the persistence of slavery and kinship laws, and the interplay between political authority and legal stability in pre-modern Korea.

1This paper examines the adoption process of Chinese legal codes from the Koryŏ to the Chosŏn periods and the subsequent changes of Korea’s legal system. Although Koryŏ organized its legal system based on the Tang code 唐律, it also adopted various other Chinese laws as needed. The Yuan 元 (1271-1368) demanded legal reforms from Koryŏ, but Koryŏ opposed, citing differences in social foundation.
