研究室紹介

Professor Gwang-Yoon Ko's research lab specializes in corpus-based applied linguistics, focusing on the authenticity, continuity, and pedagogical appropriateness of English language materials in Korean educational and media contexts. The lab investigates textbook language, standardized test vocabulary, and native-like proficiency in Korean-English contexts, with an emphasis on function words, lexical distribution, and corpus-driven evaluation. A central aim is to develop a distinct, internationally competitive model of Korean-style English linguistics grounded in empirical data.

중학교 영어 교과서의 어휘적 연계성에 대한 코퍼스 바탕 연구
고광윤, 박정준

This study is a corpus-based analysis of Korean middle school English textbooks and it aims to verify whether their English vocabulary is presented with sufficient educational continuity by examining the five most widely used series of middle school English textbooks (7th-9th grades). In particular, the study analyzes TTR (type-token ratio), the distribution of new words, average sentence length, and other relevant factors in the 15 middle school English textbooks in order to evaluate the contin

코퍼스 분석을 위한 프로그램의 선택: WordSmith Tools 4.0과 MonoConc Pro 2.2를 중심으로
고광윤

Despite the considerably growing interest in corpus linguistics and the use of authentic language data among Korean (English) linguists, only a few seem to be confident about the use of corpora and corpus tools in their linguistic research. This paper takes a close look at (more powerful) WordSmith Tools 4.0 and (more user-friendly) MonoConc Pro 2.2, two of the most useful and readily accessible software packages for corpus-based investigations and linguistic analyses, with an aim to compare the

This study is a corpus-based analysis of the English vocabulary used in the English exams of the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) and its two analogous tests (i.e., the Mock CSAT and the Achievement Test), and it aims to determine the vocabulary levels of the three types of English exams and evaluate their appropriateness as tests to measure prospective college students' English proficiency for higher education, an issue left mostly untouched in all previous studies. To achieve this goal,

English linguistics of Korea, despite its considerable development and growth for the last 50 years, has continued to lag behind that of not only the US and the UK but also many European countries and even Japan as well. The current state of English linguistics of Korea seems to be closely related, above all, to our lack of the native speaker’s intuition about English and the failure in developing a successful model of Korean-style English linguistics which enables us to overcome our weaknesses

한국 영자신문 영어의 코퍼스 바탕 연구
고광윤, 이성운

The language of English newspapers in Korea may seem grammatically perfect, partially due to the editing and correction of English-speaking proofreaders, but still shows some interesting ‘non-nativeness’ of many different kinds. This paper is a corpus-based study of the language of English newspapers in Korea and its main goal is to show what is behind the ‘non-nativeness’ of the English language found in Korean English news. The discussion of this study is mainly based on the analyses of high-f

한국의 교과서 영어는 얼마나 영어다운가
고광윤

There have been a great many studies of English textbooks in Korea, but virtually none of them have considered the authenticity of English used in the textbooks though the presence of some ungrammatical or odd English sentences in the textbooks has occasionally been noted. The present study, an effort to fill this gap, is a corpus-based analysis of Korean English textbooks and aims to demonstrate the authenticity of textbook English by examining the five most widely used series of middle school

교과서 영어의 영어다움에 대한 코퍼스 기반 분석: 기능어의 쓰임을 중심으로
고광윤

This study is a corpus-based analysis of textbook English and it attempts to evaluate the authenticity of the (English) language used in Korean English textbooks by examining the uses of high-frequency function words in the two corpora, KHERC (based on seven Korean high school English reading textbooks) and Frown Corpus. The results of this study indicate that the function words used in Korean English textbooks often do not fully represent their typical uses and distributions observed in natural

영어학연구

The so-called light verbs in English have very often been discussed both in traditional grammar and generative linguistics. The variation shown in these verbs, especially that of have a NOUN vs. take a NOUN, however, has only been very briefly mentioned, with few previous studies having provided an extensive empirical analysis of the variation, thereby letting the phenomenon remain mostly a matter of preference in British or American English. This study investigates the variation between the lig

This article investigates corpus-based English vocabulary studies carried out in Korea for the last ten years in an attempt to discuss their current status and limitations and suggest ideas for possible solutions and future directions in this research area. To attain this research goal, the present study examines a total of 40 research articles and theses that mainly aim to present an analysis of overall vocabulary level of texts. The results indicate that many of these studies need to compile a

Although the alternation of different from, different than, and different to has been among the most talked-about linguistic variations in English, few previous studies have provided a thorough empirical analysis of the alternation, thereby letting the issue remain mostly a matter of which choice is correct or more appropriate. This study discusses the use of the three English prepositions occurring after different on the basis of the relevant data from seven English corpora. The results indicat

Keyword calculation for a text in corpus linguistics is usually made through the comparison of the word list of the text with the word list of a reference corpus (RC). For this very reason, its results are highly likely to be influenced by one's choice of the RC, thereby making it worthwhile to examine the relationship between the RC and resulting keyword results. This paper is a quantitative study of the effects that the size and composition of the RC can have on the results of keyword calculat

English newspapers, along with the increasing attention to (E)NIE ((English) newspaper in education), have been one of the most recommended resources for English study among Korean students and teachers, resulting in many studies dealing with the use of English newspapers in and outside classroom. Despite considerable contribution of these studies, however, few of them have provided a systematic analysis of English newspaper vocabulary, thereby making it difficult for teachers and students to pr

A Corpus-Based Analysis of College Entrance English Exams in Korea, China, and Japan
고광윤, 백주현

This paper is a corpus-based, comparative study of the college entrance English exams in Korea, China, and Japan, and its main goal is to analyze the English vocabulary used in these English exams to evaluate how appropriate they are for measuring prospective college students' English proficiency for higher education. The results indicate that the Korean English exam shows the highest vocabulary level in all aspects, including vocabulary size and overall vocabulary level. In particular, consider
