研究室紹介

Professor Gyewon Park's research lab focuses on metabolic and inflammatory diseases, with a central emphasis on understanding the molecular mechanisms of adipose tissue biology, including white, brown, and beige fat development. The lab investigates nuclear receptors such as PPARγ as key regulators of lipid metabolism and energy homeostasis, aiming to identify therapeutic targets for obesity, insulin resistance, and related metabolic disorders. Additionally, the lab explores natural bioactive compounds—particularly from mushrooms and plant extracts—evaluating their anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-hypertensive properties using in vitro and in vivo models.

The multifaceted factor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor c (PPARc) in metabolism, immunity, and cancer
김정훈, 송재환, 박계원

The consumption of high-calorie foods combinedwith less physical exercise has increased the prevalenceof obesity. Obesity is also associated with high bloodpressure, atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, diabetes, impaired host defense, and the risk of some cancers. Because PPARc is a central player that participates invarious biological responses, including lipid metabolism, inflammation, and cell proliferation, further understandingof the lipid metabolic sensor PPARc is necessary to reducethe inc

Induction of thermogenic adipocytes: molecular targets and thermogenic small molecules
송노준, 장서혁, Dean Y Li, Claudio J Villanueva, 박계원

Adipose tissue is a central metabolic organ that controls energy homeostasis of the whole body. White adipose tissue (WAT) stores excess energy in the form of triglycerides, whereas brown adipose tissue (BAT) dissipates energy in the form of heat through mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (Ucp1). A newly identified adipose tissue called ‘beige fat’ (BAT-like) is produced through a process called WAT browning. This tissue mainly resides in WAT depots and displays intermediate characteristics of b

Genistein Mediates the Anti-Adipogenic Actions of Sophora japonica L. Extracts
So-Ra Jung, Young-Jun Kim, 권아령, Jina Lee, Dong-Gyu Jo, 전태준, 홍정우, 박기문, 박계원

Previous studies showed that feeding diets containing the mature fruits of Sophora japonica L. prevented body weight gain and reduced fat mass in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. This observation has led to the hypothesis that extracts from S. japonica L. may inhibit adipocyte differentiation of preadipocytes. To elucidate the possible mechanisms for the anti-obesity action of S. japonica L., its effects on adipocyte differentiation were investigated in C3H10T1/2 mesenchymal stem cells and 3T3-

ZAS3 promotes TNFα-induced apoptosis by blocking NFκB-activated expression of the anti-apoptotic genes TRAF1 and TRAF2
Dong-Hyeon Shin, 박계원, Lai-Chu Wu, 홍정우

ZAS3 is a large zinc finger transcription repressor that binds the κB-motif via two signature domains of ZASN and ZASC. A loss-of-function study showed that lack of ZAS3 protein induced accelerated cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. Conversely,gain-of-function studies showed that ZAS3 repressed NFκB-activated transcription by competing with NFκB for the κB-motif. Based on these observations, we hypothesize that ZAS3 promotes apoptosis by interrupting anti-apoptotic activity of NFκB. Here, we
