Professor Ha-Yeon Choi's research lab specializes in optical fiber communication systems, with a focus on enhancing the performance and reliability of long-haul and metro all-fiber optical networks. The lab investigates advanced noise monitoring techniques in distributed Raman amplified systems, particularly the simultaneous detection of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and multi-path interference (MPI) noise using polarization-based methods. Their work enables real-time, format- and rate-independent monitoring of optical signal quality, supporting the development of next-generation high-capacity transmission systems.

1We develop a new technique for simultaneously monitoring the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and multi-path interference (MPI) noises in distributed Raman amplified (DRA) systems. This technique utilizes the facts that the degree-of polarization (DOP) of the MPI noise is 1/9, while the ASE noise is unpolarized.
