Professor Hae Won Lee's research lab specializes in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery, with a strong focus on expanding the criteria for liver transplantation in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients, particularly in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) settings. The lab investigates prognostic factors, disease recurrence, and survival outcomes in patients with advanced or borderline HCC, aiming to identify biologically favorable tumors that may benefit from transplantation beyond standard criteria. Additionally, the lab explores complications such as intrahepatic biliary strictures after liver transplantation and innovative interventions like post-LT embolotherapy for severe hepatopulmonary syndrome.

15HR was significantly superior to RFA in terms of disease-free survival; however, the overall survival was excellent in both groups.
Intrahepatic biliary stricture (IHBS) after liver transplantation (LT) may develop in patients with hepatic artery thrombosis, chronic rejection, or ABO incompatibility, as well as in patients with prolonged warm ischemia in non-heart-beating donor (NHBD) LT. However, the clinical course and methods of management have not been well defined for IHBSs to date. Thus, the purpose of this study was to provide a classification of post-LT IHBS and to investigate patient prognosis. Forty-four patients w
Although far advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is generally considered a contraindication for liver transplantation (LT), biologically favorable tumors among them could show acceptable results. However, it is still unclear which tumors can be treated with LT. Data were collected on adult patients who underwent LT for HCC beyond the Milan criteria in 8 Korean LT centers between January 2000 and June 2013. Far advanced HCC was defined as HCC with the largest tumor ≥ 10 cm, 10 or more tumor n
There has been ongoing debate that the Milan criteria may be too strict that a significant number of patients who could benefit from liver transplantation (LT) might have been excluded. Based on this idea, various studies have been conducted to further expand the Milan criteria and give more HCC patients a chance of cure. In deceased donor LT (DDLT) setting, expansion of the criteria is relatively tempered because the results of LT for HCC should be comparable to those of patients with non-malig
The overall chance of survival, and recipient/donor preferences as well as the risk of recurrence are considered in the LDLT setting. Therefore, the selection criteria for liver transplantation for HCC could benefit from expansion for LDLT.
Although liver transplantation (LT) is the only effective treatment option for hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS), the post-LT morbidity and mortality have been high for patients with severe HPS. We performed post-LT embolotherapy in a 10-year-old boy who had severe type I HPS preoperatively, but he failed to recover early from his hypoxemic symptoms after an LT. Multiple embolizations were then successfully performed on the major branches that formed the abnormal vascular structures. After the embo
The Milan criteria are still considered the gold standard for patient selection criteria for liver transplantation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. However, those criteria may be too strict and thus exclude a significant number of patients who could benefit from liver transplantation. Based on this notion, many expanded selection criteria have been suggested. In Asian countries, where there is a serious shortage of deceased donor organs, living donor liver transplantation accounts for
We report the first identification of a spawning ground of the blackfin flounder Glyptocephlaus stelleri near the Wangdol-cho sea mountains, located in the southern East Sea. Eggs and larval fish of G. stelleri were collected during April and June, 2014, when an abundance of eggs was found in the southern area of Wangdol-cho. Our findings suggest that G. stelleri prefers to spawn in the vicinity of the off-shore sea mountains, where the temperature is between 10 and <TEX>$12^{\circ}C$</TEX> and
We investigated the major trends in health aid financing in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) by identifying the primary donor organizations and examining several data sources to track overall health aid trends. We collected gross disbursements from bilateral donor countries and international organizations toward the DPRK according to specific health sectors by using the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development creditor reporting system database and the United Nations
With the recent development of image processing and deep learning technology, research and application in the fields of ultra-high-resolution image generation and cartoon-style conversion are expanding further.Among the ultra-resolution image generation models, the CartoonGAN model is specialized in generating cartoon-style images, but there are limitations in terms of resolution improvement. This study proposes an innovative method of additionally applying a Super-Resolution Convolutional Neural

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Long-term preoperative lamivudine therapy has been recommended for patients with positive HBV DNA to suppress HBV replication before liver transplantation. However, it is unclear whether preoperative lamivudine therapy is mandatory in HBV DNA positive patients to reliably prevent HBV recurrence or whether transplantation should be delayed to allow time for sufficient preoperative lamivudine therapy. METHODOLOGY: From January 2000 to January 2004, thirty-eight patients serum posi
Although laparoscopic donor right hepatectomy (LDRH) is increasingly performed in adult living donor liver transplantation, most experiences have been reported from a limited number of major transplant centers. This is because LDRH requires high-level surgical skills and a guarantee of donor safety. Thus, despite its many advantages, this operation program should be performed with caution, especially in less experienced centers. Various surgical techniques and the know-how have been introduced b
