Professor Han Sung Lee's research lab specializes in clinical and translational biomedical research, focusing on infectious diseases in immunocompromised populations, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus and opportunistic infections like Mycobacterium kansasii. The lab also investigates biomarker detection in oncology, notably through innovative digital pathology techniques such as deep learning-based virtual immunohistochemistry for HER2 in breast cancer. Additionally, the lab explores antimicrobial resistance, especially metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Gram-negative pathogens, and outcomes in musculoskeletal surgery, such as meniscal repair in different age groups. The integration of clinical microbiology, computational pathology, and patient-centered outcomes defines the lab’s interdisciplinary approach.

Infection is a major cause of mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study describes infectious complications in SLE patients and analyzes the risk factors for infection at the time of SLE diagnosis and during the course of SLE in a case-control study. The pathogenic role of inflammation in inclusion body myositis (IBM) remains uncertain. A 63-year-old man developed a severe, rapidly progressive myopathy with clinical features typical of dermatomyositis (DM), but muscle pathology was typical of IBM. Treatment with prednisone and methotrexate resulted in complete remission of symptoms. Together with two similar cases reported previously, this case suggests that the inflammatory process of DM may trigger the pathologic changes of IBM.
