Professor Han-Joon Kim's research lab specializes in advanced functional oxide materials, particularly hafnia-based ferroelectrics for next-generation nanoelectronics, with a focus on enhancing ferroelectric properties through atomic-layer deposition and nanostructure engineering. The lab also explores smart drug delivery systems using ultrasound-responsive materials and investigates neurological disorders, particularly Parkinson’s disease, through clinical and neuromodulation studies. Their work bridges materials science, biomedical engineering, and clinical neurology to develop innovative solutions for energy-efficient electronics and personalized medical therapies.

15The degradation of ferroelectric (FE) properties of atomic layer deposited Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 films with increasing thickness was mitigated by inserting 1 nm-thick Al2O3 interlayer at middle position of the thickness of the FE film. The large Pr of 10 μC/cm2, which is 11 times larger than that of single layer Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 film with equivalent thickness, was achieved from the films as thick as 40 nm. Ultrasound is used as an external trigger for the pulsatile release of the drug ibuprofen. The system is composed of mesoporous silica as the drug reservoir and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as an implantable body. Subthalamic deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) is an established treatment for the motor symptoms in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective medical record review to determine the survival of 455 Korean multiple system atrophy (MSA) patients and examined the effect of clinical factors that could possibly influence survival. The patients comprised 222 men and 233 women. RESULTS: Age at onset was 60.1 ± 8.8 years (mean ± SD) and did not differ between the sexes. STN DBS improves pain in PD, and this beneficial effect persists, being observed after a prolonged follow-up of 24 months. In addition, in many of the PD patients new, mainly musculoskeletal pain developed on longer follow-up.
The high proportion of patients with SCA mutations in this study indicates that genetic testing for SCA should be included for patients with MSA, especially for patients with cerebellar dysfunctions.
