Professor Hee-ju Kim's research lab specializes in developing advanced immunoassay technologies and investigating immune mechanisms underlying inflammatory skin diseases. The lab focuses on engineering novel antibody-derived reagents, such as VHH nanobodies, for sensitive detection of small molecules like environmental toxins, while also exploring the neuroimmunological basis of chronic itch in conditions like dermatomyositis and atopic dermatitis. Using cutting-edge techniques including phage display, real-time PCR-based immunoassays, and functional neuroimaging, the lab bridges molecular diagnostics with translational immunology. Their work aims to improve diagnostic sensitivity and uncover therapeutic targets for inflammatory and pruritic skin disorders.

Although lupus erythematosus is known to be more common among women of color, the study populations in previous reports were predominantly Caucasian and there is scarce information on Asian patients. Skin barrier dysfunction induces skin inflammation. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is known to be involved in Th17-mediated immune responses and barrier integrity in the cornea and intestine; however, its role in the skin barrier remains largely unknown.
