Professor Hee Soo Moon's research lab specializes in clinical and epidemiological studies of headache disorders and cerebrovascular diseases, with a focus on understanding the clinical implications of biomarkers like cardiac troponin T in acute ischemic stroke. The lab investigates the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and management of chronic daily headache, cluster headache, and migraine in the Korean population, contributing to national and international headache guidelines. Their work emphasizes improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment strategies through large-scale surveys and classification systems such as the ICHD-3β.

Cardiac Troponin T Elevation After Stroke: Relationships Between Elevated Serum Troponin T, Stroke Location, and Prognosis
송화석, 백장현, 진동관, 정필욱, 문희수, 서범천, 김용범, 김병문, 우희연, 이용택, 박광열

Background and Purpose: Elevation of serum cardiac troponin T (cTnT) is regarded as a specific marker of acute coronary syndrome. Serum cTnT can be increased in patients with acute ischemic stroke, but its clinical implications remain unclear. The aim of this study was to identify the relationships between elevated cTnT and stroke severity, location, and prognosis. Methods: From January 2005 to December 2006, this study recruited 455 consecutive patients who were admitted to Kangbuk Samsung Hosp

Journal of Korean Medical Science

Cluster headache (CH) is a rare underdiagnosed primary headache disorder with very severe unilateral pain and autonomic symptoms. Clinical characteristics of Korean patients with CH have not yet been reported. We analyzed the clinical features of CH patients from 11 university hospitals in Korea. Among a total of 200 patients with CH, only 1 patient had chronic CH. The average age of CH patients was 38.1 ± 8.9 years (range 19–60 years) and the average age of onset was 30.7 ± 10.3 years (range 10

Background and Purpose Chronic daily headache (CDH) is a commonly reported reasonfor visiting hospital neurology departments, but its prevalence, clinical characteristics, andmanagement have not been well documented in Korea. The objective of this study was to characterize the 1-year prevalence, clinical characteristics, medical consultations, and treatment forCDH in Korea. Methods The Korean Headache Survey (KHS) is a nationwide descriptive survey of 1507Korean adults aged between 19 and 69 yea

Journal of Korean Medical Science

The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility and usefulness of the International Classification of Headache Disorders, third edition, beta version (ICHD-3β), and compare the differences with the International Classification of Headache Disorders, second edition (ICHD-2). Consecutive first-visit patients were recruited from 11 headache clinics in Korea. Headache classification was performed in accordance with ICHD-3β. The characteristics of headaches were analyzed and the feasibility and

Globally, migraine is the third most common disease affecting 1.3 billion people worldwide and the second leading cause of disability. With the recent advances in new drugs and device technology for the treatment of migraine, the Korean Headache Society (KHS) and American Headache Society (AHS) released a new practice guideline on the treatment of migraine in 2019, respectively. They developed their consensus statement after reviewing existing guidelines and recent clinical trials and having dis

박광열, 윤영철, 정진상, 이광호, 김경문, 정필욱, 문희수, 김용범

Background and purpose: We investigated subsequent vascular events in patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) and determined the predictors of such events among vascular risk factors including large-artery disease, TIA-symptom duration, and acute ischemic lesions on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Methods: We identified 98 consecutive patients with TIA who visited a tertiary university hospital and underwent DWI and brain magnetic resonance angiography within 48 hours of symptom onset. W

Background and Purpose New-onset headache in elderly patients is generally suggestive of a high probability of secondary headache, and the subtypes of primary headache diagnoses are still unclear in the elderly. This study investigated the characteristics of headache with an older age at onset (≥65 years) and compared the characteristics between younger and older age groups. Methods We prospectively collected demographic and clinical data of 1,627 patients who first visited 11 tertiary hospitals

Background and PurposezzChronic daily headache (CDH) is defned as a headache disorder in which headaches occur on a daily or near-daily basis (at least 15 days/month) for more than 3 months. Chronic migraine (CM) and medication overuse headache (MOH) are very disabling headaches that remain underdiagnosed. Te aim of this study was to establish the frequency of CDH and its various subtypes, and examine the associations with MOH among frst-visit headache patients presenting at neurology outpatient

Background and Purpose Te objective of this study was to determine diagnostic andprognostic values of proximal radial motor conduction in acute compressive radial neuropathy. Methods Tirty-nine consecutive cases of acute compressive radial neuropathy with radialconduction studies–including stimulation at Erb’s point–performed within 14 days fromclinical onset were reviewed. Te radial conduction data of 39 control subjects were used asreference data. Results Tirty-one men and eight women (age, 45

Background and Purpose: Progression of motor deficits in the acute period is frequently observed in patients with subcortical striatocapsular infarctions. Therefore, we sought to determine the factors associated with early motor progression in patients with infarcts confined to the striatocapsular region. Methods: We studied 80 consecutive patients with striatocapsular-region infarction, as defined by clinical and MRI criteria, within 24 hours after stroke onset. Motor progression was defined as

Background and Purpose Cluster headache (CH) can present with migrainous symptoms such as nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia. In addition, an overlap between CH and migraine has been reported. This study aimed to determine the differences in the characteristics of CH according to the presence of comorbid migraine. Methods This study was performed using data from a prospective multicenter registry study of CH involving 16 headache clinics. CH and migraine were diagnosed by headache specialists

Cluster headache attacks can be successfully treated with oxygen. We report four patients with episodic cluster headache were treated with oxygen therapy from one or two oxygen concentrators. Oxygen therapy with two oxygen concentrators seems to be effective in reduction or cessation of pain of cluster headaches. Patients expressed excellent satisfaction to oxygen therapy with two oxygen concentrators. Oxygen concentrators can be considered as an effective and safe alternative of oxygen cylinder

diagnosis is delayed. We addressed this issue by developing the self-administered Cluster Headache Screening Questionnaire (CHSQ). Methods Experts selected items from the diagnostic criteria of CH and the characteristics of migraine. The questionnaire was administered to first-visit headache patients at nine headache clinics. The finally developed CHSQ included items based on the differences in responses between CH and non-CH patients, and the accuracy and reliability of the scoring model were a
