Professor Hee Sun Lee's research lab specializes in cardiovascular epidemiology and preventive cardiology, with a strong focus on identifying and managing modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in young and middle-aged adults. The lab investigates the long-term impact of dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, and cardiomyopathies on cardiovascular and renal outcomes using large-scale national health databases. A key research direction involves evaluating real-world effectiveness and safety of novel pharmacotherapies, such as SGLT2 inhibitors, across diverse populations including Asians and those at low cardiovascular risk. The lab also explores innovative digital health interventions, such as voice recognition-based telehealth programs, to improve heart failure management and patient-reported outcomes.

15Aims Dyslipidaemia is a modifiable cardiovascular risk factor with prognostic implications. Current strategies for lipid management in young adults are largely based on expert recommendations. We investigated the risks of death and cardiovascular disease in relation to each lipid component to establish evidence for primary prevention in young adults. Methods In this nationwide population-based cohort study, we analysed 5,688,055 statin-naïve subjects, aged 20–39 years, undergoing general health
BACKGROUND: Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors displayed cardiovascular benefits in type 2 diabetes mellitus in previous studies; however, there were some heterogeneities regarding respective cardiovascular outcomes within the class. Furthermore, their efficacies in Asians, females, and those with low cardiovascular risks were under-represented. Thus, we compared the cardiovascular outcomes between new users of dapagliflozin and empagliflozin in a broad range of patients with type 2 diab
Although hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), the most common inherited cardiomyopathy, has mortality rate as low as general population, previous studies have focused on identifying high-risk of sudden cardiac death. Thus, long-term systemic impact of HCM is still unclear. We sought to investigate the association between HCM and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This was a nationwide population-based cohort study using the National Health Insurance Service database. We investigated incident ESRD dur
AIMS: As lifetime accumulation of cardiovascular risk factors is gaining importance, early identification and management of risk factors are being emphasized. The global prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), a constellation of these risk factors, is increasing, particularly among young adults. In this study, we aim to investigate the association between cumulative exposure to metabolic risk and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in young adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this nationwide population-ba
Predominant VAT area on CT is the strongest predictor of CAC progression regardless of BMI or WC in apparently healthy Korean population. Assessment of body fat distribution may be helpful to identify subjects at higher risk.
Short-term application of ICT-based telehealth program with voice recognition technology showed the potential to improve uNa values and MLHFQ scores in HF patients, suggesting that better control of sodium intake and greater quality of life can be achieved by this program.
OBJECTIVES: Hyponatraemia is a well-known predictor of clinical outcomes in heart failure (HF). However, the mechanism remains poorly understood. Previous reports suggest that hyponatraemia is related to right HF. We sought to evaluate the association between right ventricular (RV) dysfunction and hyponatraemia, and the impact of this relationship on the prognosis of patients with acute heart failure (AHF). METHODS: This is a nested case-control study of the Korean Acute Heart Failure registry.
AIMS: Clonal haematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), defined as a clonal expansion of age-related recurrent somatic mutations, has recently emerged as a novel cardiovascular risk factor. However, the precise role of CHIP in the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Among 4300 asymptomatic Korean participants aged 40-79 years, we investigated the risk of ASCVD by CHIP and the interplay between CHIP and conventional risk facto
Comprehensive CCTA evaluation of coronary atherosclerosis provides independent and incremental prognostic value in relation to SPECT evaluation of myocardial ischemia. Specifically, segmentally-analyzed plaque composition with CCTA provides further risk stratification in addition to CACS and DS.
