Professor Heyun Jo's research lab focuses on pediatric nephrology and metabolic health, with a strong emphasis on understanding the pathophysiology of kidney disease, hypertension, and cardiovascular risk factors in children and adolescents. The lab investigates biomarkers such as microalbuminuria and complement system regulation to identify early indicators of organ damage and to explore mechanisms linking obesity, diabetes, and renal dysfunction. Additionally, the lab contributes to clinical pharmacology through studies on drug-induced nephrotoxicity, particularly vancomycin-related acute kidney injury in pediatric populations. Their work bridges basic immunological mechanisms with clinical outcomes in pediatric populations.

Prevalence of microalbuminuria and its associated cardiometabolic risk factors in Korean youth: Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

The prevalence of microalbuminuria is not prominent in obese children and adolescents. Our findings demonstrated that the presence of hypertension and hyperglycemia was associated with microalbuminuria. Especially Hemoglobin A1c was associated with microalbuminuria in youths regardless of weight status. Microalbuminuria in pediatric population can be a helpful marker for the risk of cardiovascular disease.
