Professor Hokyung Choung's research lab specializes in ocular oncology and autoimmune disorders of the eye, with a focus on IgG4-related disease, ocular adnexal lymphomas, and orbital tumors. The lab investigates molecular mechanisms underlying these conditions, including epigenetic alterations such as CpG island methylation and dysregulation of key signaling pathways like Sonic hedgehog and Wnt. Clinical and pathological studies are integrated with translational research to improve diagnosis, treatment, and surgical outcomes in patients with complex orbital and ocular surface diseases.

15BACKGROUND/AIM: To analyse the clinical risk factors for extraophthalmic involvement and treatment outcomes in patients with IgG4-related ophthalmic disease (IgG4-ROD) in Korea. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 42 patients diagnosed with IgG4-ROD confirmed by a surgical biopsy during the 7-year period, between January 2009 and March 2015, at three tertiary referral centres in Korea. Data regarding patients' demographics, clinical characteristics and radiological findings w
Aberrant CpG island methylation of tumor suppressor genes is a frequent event in ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma. In particular, high frequencies of DAPK and ECAD methylation may be strongly correlated with ocular adnexal MALT lymphomagenesis in South Korea. Furthermore, ECAD hypermethylation is closely associated with C. psittaci infection, which may shed light on the mechanisms of bacterium-induced oncogenesis.
Medpor SST is relatively safe, allowing for a mean follow-up of 5 years in terms of implant exposure, and may be a good choice of orbital implant for children with retinoblastoma.
PURPOSE: Activation or dysregulation of the Sonic hedgehog (Shh) and Wnt signaling pathways is suggested to lead to the development of many human malignancies. In this study, we investigated Shh and Wnt signaling protein expression in eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma, and analyzed their correlation with clinical characteristics of the tumor. METHODS: Patients who underwent surgical resection of eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma from 1999 to 2011 were recruited for the study. Immunohistochemical s
This study aims to analyze clinical and pathological characteristics of ocular adnexal extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (EMZL) accompanying IgG4-positive cells. Fifty patients with a diagnosis of primary non-conjunctival ocular adnexal EMZL were enrolled in this study. The number of IgG4-positive cells and the ratio of IgG/IgG4 were evaluated by immunohistochemistry in the biopsy specimens. The patients were divided into two groups based on the absolute number and the ratio of IgG4-posit
PURPOSE: To report factors associated with preoperative squinting, defined as transient eye closure in bright light, and photophobia and the factors affecting improvement of these symptoms postoperatively in intermittent exotropia. METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients (N = 99) were divided into groups according to the presence (n = 54) or absence (n = 45) of preoperative squinting and the presence (n = 64) or absence (n = 35) of photophobia. Clinical characteristics, including overacti
The authors developed a technique for the retroscleral implantation of a porous polyethylene orbital implant after evisceration for the placement of an adequately large orbital implant without wound tension. The surgical results of the technique in 27 patients are reported. The technique involves the severance of the optic nerve after standard evisceration and the insertion of the orbital implant into the retroscleral and intraconal space through the side of the scleral shell. All patients recei
SIGNIFICANCE: Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) has variable initial manifestations, and acute orbital inflammation may be the first sign without apparent zoster rash. This case series is significant for presenting diverse clinical features and treatment options of HZO with acute orbital inflammation. PURPOSE: To report a case series of patients diagnosed as HZO with acute orbital inflammation including two cases with unique presentations. CASE REPORTS: Medical records of four patients of HZO wit
Slow-releasing paclitaxel in PTFE/PLGA was found to reduce adhesion and allowed delayed adjustment in most eyes for up to 5 weeks after surgery.
BACKGROUND: Ocular adnexal IgG4-related sclerosing disease (IgG4-SD) has been categorized as a novel disease entity. It is characterized by stromal sclerosis and an infiltration of mass-forming lymphoplasmic cells containing many IgG4-positive plasma cells. Although ocular adnexal tissue involvement has been increasingly reported, a focal nodular sub-brow mass is not typical in an IgG4-SD presentation. We report a rare case of probable ocular adnexal IgG4-SD that clinically mimicked eyelid pilom
Translocations involving the MALT1 gene are not common in Korean ocular adnexal MALT lymphomas. The t(14;18) translocation was detected in only one out of 30 cases, and the t(11;18) translocation was not found at all. Furthermore, the chromosomal aberrations found in this study had no prognostic implications.
PURPOSE: To investigate whether the position of the central retinal vascular trunk (CRVT), as a surrogate of lamina cribrosa (LC) offset, was associated with the presence of glaucoma in normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) patients. METHODS: The position of the CRVT was measured as the deviation from the center of the Bruch's membrane opening (BMO), as delineated by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography imaging. The offset index was calculated as the distance of the CRVT from the BMO center rela
Purpose: To present five cases of lower eyelid cicatricial entropion secondary to ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) successfully repaired with a conjunctival-sparing surgical technique. Methods: The records of one surgeon (SKF) were reviewed to identify patients with lower eyelid cicatricial entropion secondary to OCP who underwent repair with a conjunctival-sparing technique between September 1, 2016 and October 18, 2017. The medical records were reviewed and extracted data inclu
