研究室紹介

Professor Hong Seok Kim's research lab focuses on nanomaterials for environmental remediation and biomedical applications, particularly the development of stable, reactive nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) particles for contaminant degradation. The lab also investigates cellular senescence mechanisms, oxidative stress in monocytes, and their roles in chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis and osteonecrosis-related joint failure. A significant portion of the research is dedicated to long-term outcomes of orthopedic implants, especially ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty in young patients with osteonecrosis. The lab integrates materials science, molecular biology, and clinical outcomes research to address environmental and health challenges.

Atmospherically Stable Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Particles Formed under Controlled Air Contact: Characteristics and Reactivity
Hong Seok Kim, Jun‐Young Ahn, Kyung‐Yup Hwang, Il-Kyu Kim, Inseong Hwang
SJR Q1Environmental Science & Technology

Atmospherically stable NZVI (nanoscale zero-valent iron) particles were produced by modifying shell layers of Fe(H2) NZVI particles (RNIP-10DS) by using a controlled air contact method. Shell-modified NZVI particles were resistant to rapid aerial oxidation and were shown to have TCE degradation rate constants that were equivalent to 78% of those of pristine NZVI particles. Fe(H2) NZVI particles that were vigorously contacted with air (rapidly oxidized) showed a substantially compromised reactivi

Phosphorylated Extracellular Signal-regulated Protein Kinases 1 and 2 Phosphorylate Sp1 on Serine 59 and Regulate Cellular Senescence via Transcription of p21Sdi1/Cip1/Waf1
Hong Seok Kim, In Kyoung Lim
SJR Q1Journal of Biological ChemistryOA

Expression of p21(Sdi1) downstream of p53 is essential for induction of cellular senescence, although cancer cell senescence can also occur in the p53 null condition. We report herein that senescence-associated phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases 1 and 2 (SA-pErk1/2) enhanced p21(Sdi1) transcription by phosphorylating Sp1 on Ser(59) downstream of protein kinase C (PKC) alpha. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), which was increased in cellular senescence, significantly activa

Regulation of Monocyte Adhesion and Migration by Nox4
Chi Fung Lee, Sarah L. Ullevig, Hong Seok Kim, Reto Asmis
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

We showed that metabolic disorders promote thiol oxidative stress in monocytes, priming monocytes for accelerated chemokine-induced recruitment, and accumulation at sites of vascular injury and the progression of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to identify both the source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for thiol oxidation in primed and dysfunctional monocytes and the molecular mechanisms through which ROS accelerate the migration and recruitment of monocyte-derived macro

SJR Q1Clinical Orthopaedics and Related ResearchOA

BACKGROUND: Recently, impingement between the femoral stem and ceramic liner, which appears as a notch in the stem neck on radiographs, has emerged as a new complication. However, the proportion of impingement, potential risk factors, and related complications are poorly elucidated. QUESTION/PURPOSES: In patients who underwent ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) THA and had at least 10 years of follow-up, we asked: (1) What proportion had radiographic evidence of stem neck-ceramic liner impingement (notchi

A Domain in the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Triplex Protein VP23 Is Essential for Closure of Capsid Shells into Icosahedral Structures
Hong Seok Kim, Eugene Huang, Jigisha Desai, Marieta Solé, Erin N. Pryce, Mercy E. Okoye, Stanley Person, Prashant Desai
SJR Q1Journal of Virology

VP23 is a key component of the triplex structure. The triplex, which is unique to herpesviruses, is a complex of three proteins, two molecules of VP23 which interact with a single molecule of VP19C. This structure is important for shell accretion and stability of the protein coat. Previous studies utilized a random transposition mutagenesis approach to identify functional domains of the triplex proteins. In this study, we expand on those findings to determine the key amino acids of VP23 that are
