研究室紹介
Professor Hong Won Suh's research lab specializes in literary studies with a focus on John Milton’s works, particularly their rhetorical strategies, epistemic expression in second language writing, and cross-cultural reception. The lab investigates how linguistic choices—especially in expressing certainty, doubt, and identity—shape meaning in both academic and literary texts. It also explores the translation history of Western literature into Korean, with a strong emphasis on Milton’s writings and their cultural impact in Korea. The lab’s work bridges comparative literature, applied linguistics, and translation studies, often examining the interplay between voice, silence, and identity in literary texts.

15A key aspect of academic writing involves delivering writer`s argument with an appropriate degree of mitigated expression and strong assertion. However, positioning statements with balanced qualification and certainty remains a formidable challenge for second language learners. Despite its significance, we know little on the use of epistemic devices in Korean students` English writing. The purpose of this paper is to compare the expression of doubt and certainty in English writing by Korean stud
Preparing for a course in Paradise Lost involves several considerations, the first of them being external conditions pertaining to the class, such as the objective of the course (whether to teach Paradise Lost as literature or as a theological narrative), the composition of the student group (whether English majors or not), the level of the course (whether undergraduate or graduate, for instance), etc. Once these factors are established, the next steps would be the choice of texts and textbooks
In this paper, I focus on Milton's resistance to choosing a credible employment in a letter to an unknown friend and in Lycidas. Composed in 1633 and 1637 respectively, these two pieces of writing reveal Milton's assessment of himself at the beginning and end of his years of study at Hammersmith and at Horton. Is there a perceptible change in his sense of vocation? What remains unchanged? What, in his mind, was his vocation? Was it, as is still popularly known, a career as a poet?
By time Milton published second edition of The Readie and Easie Way, it was now too late to change course of England’s history, and his proposed political model was already beyond reach of his people. Milton’s decision to go ahead with publication of second edition, therefore, deserves some scrutiny. In this essay, I propose that this decision was prompted by very defeat of his cause. I also propose that title of treatise now contains an intentional irony that was not discernible in first editio
My aim in this paper is to approach Sidney’s Astrophil and Stella through the now largely ignored art of rhetoric and thus recuperate some of the lost implications of frequently anthologized poems like Sonnet 1. In the sonnet sequence I detect a struggle between Sidney’s desire to preserve an ideal (in the form of Stella) and a competing desire to communicate that earlier desire through a medium of communication that makes preservation of that ideal impossible. En route, I discuss issues of the
In this paper, I am interested in tracing the roots of William Hunter's dissatisfaction with Milton's Christian Doctrine. Following a couple of local skirmishes with Hunter on the issue of free will and mortalism, I move on to Hunter's emphasis on the Holy Spirit as the invoked, despite the Christian Doctrine's prohibitive assertions against invoking the Spirit. I point out that Hunter's concern with the Holy Spirit is part of a long crusade, on the part of Hunter, to cleanse Milton of the taint
The Poems of 1645 marks a defining moment in the poet’s career. Milton’s need for respectability to counter the attacks on his divorce tracts, combined with anxiety that his “late spring no bud or blossom shew’th” (“Sonnet 7” 4), converge in the printing of this volume of poetry. Though A Masque was the longest poem he had composed thus far, length was perhaps the least of Milton’s reasons for placing at the center of the collection. In this paper, I suggest that the career of the Masque from it
