研究室紹介
Professor Hong Yong Choi's research lab specializes in urological pathology and minimally invasive urological interventions, with a strong focus on benign and malignant prostate diseases, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer, and rare prostate lesions such as basal cell hyperplasia. The lab investigates diagnostic accuracy using imaging modalities like MRI and ultrasonography, evaluates treatment outcomes of medical and surgical therapies—particularly tamsulosin and endoscopic procedures—and explores novel approaches to prevent complications such as urethral stricture recurrence. The research integrates clinical pathology, radiological correlation, and translational urology to improve patient outcomes through precise diagnosis and targeted therapy.

15Most foreign bodies in the lower genitourinary tract are self-inserted via the urethra as the result of exotic impulses, psychometric problems, sexual curiosity, or sexual practice while intoxicated. Diagnosis of these foreign bodies can be done by clinical history, physical examination, and image studies of the patient. The treatment of foreign bodies is determined by their size, location, shape, and mobility. In most cases, minimally invasive procedures such as endoscopic removal are recommend
The morphologic description and measurements of endarterectomy specimens are usually believed to be accurate and are used as the gold standard against which the findings of diagnostic procedures are judged. Pathology data on 289 endarterectomy specimens from five participating centers and the corresponding angiography and B-mode ultrasonography data provided a basis for scrutinizing the validity of using the morphologic measurements as a standard. Discrepancies of greater than 1 mm between patho
Basal cell hyperplasia of the prostate is a rare, benign lesion that often has been misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma. Thirteen cases of basal cell hyperplasia were reviewed. All of the patients were over 60 years of age (range 63-83) and all had benign prostatic hypertrophy in addition to basal cell hyperplasia. Histologic features consisted of nests of uniform small cells with scant cytoplasm forming solid nests and acinar structures. Some foci had nodular configurations and most were located wit
Radical prostatectomy specimens from 53 men with clinical stage A or B prostate cancer were retrospectively reviewed and compared with correlative axial T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images obtained just before surgery. Non-cancerous lesions were evaluated for signal intensity and location. Focal high-signal-intensity areas (n = 72) were present in 81% of patients. The 26% of lesions seen in the central gland all correlated with cystic atrophy. Of the 53 lesions seen in the peripheral pros
PURPOSE: To analyze the effectiveness of tamsulosin 0.2 mg once daily for 3 months according to the degree of intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 134 BPH patients over 40 years of age treated with tamsulosin 0.2 mg between January 2007 and January 2009 were enrolled retrospectively. The patients were classified into three groups according to the degree of IPP: below 5 mm (group A), between 5 and 10 mm (gro
HA/CMC instillation during EIU may decrease the incidence of urethral stricture recurrence. In addition, the use of HA/CMC was effective in reducing pain during the early postoperative period without an adverse effect.
Even for large prostate glands, the results of this study suggest that bipolar TURP is an effective and safe operation owing to the significant improvements in voiding symptoms, shorter hospitalization, and fewer complications such as transurethral resection syndrome.
This is a case report of a patient believed to be the first reported case of pulmonary metastases from follicular carcinoma of the thyroid undergoing transformation to anaplastic carcinoma proven by serial biopsies.
The prevalence of OAB in our study was about 14.1% and the risk factors for OAB were educational status, stroke, osteoporosis, asthma, rhinitis, and cataract. Knowledge of these risk factors may help in the diagnosis and treatment of OAB.
BACKGROUND: Extracellular newly identified RAGE-binding protein (EN-RAGE) is a ligand of the receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE) and has been termed S100A12. The ligation of EN-RAGE with RAGE on the endothelium, mononuclear phagocytes and lymphocytes triggers cellular activation with the generation of the key proinflammatory mediators interleukin (IL)-1beta and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of RAGE and EN-RAGE
PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the significance of early detection of transition zone prostate cancer by transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in whom prostate cancer was suspected despite a negative transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) biopsy result. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2006 to January 2009, a total of 165 patients who underwent TURP were evaluated. The prostate cancer detection rate was
This prospective study evaluated the safety of tadalafil 5 mg taken once a day in terms of hypotensive side effects and whether it improves lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and restores sexual function in patients with erectile dysfunction who are receiving concomitant α-blocker (AB) therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). A total of 158 LUTS/BPH patients receiving AB therapy for ≥3 months were given tadalafil 5 mg once a day. Before treatment with tadalafil (V1), and 4 weeks (V2) and
Although previous studies have suggested that childhood trauma and parental death are strongly associated with suicidality in adulthood, it is still unclear how these factors interact within the same population. A total of 1396 adults were recruited through nationwide multistage probability sampling in South Korea. Subjects were evaluated through face-to-face interviews using the Suicidality Module of the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Sh
