Professor Hwa Young Kim's research lab focuses on microbial pathogenesis and host-microbe interactions, particularly the molecular mechanisms underlying antibiotic tolerance in pathogenic bacteria such as *Vibrio cholerae*, with a strong emphasis on the stringent response and (p)ppGpp signaling. The lab also investigates the impact of metabolic and body composition factors—such as overweight, obesity, and body composition—on pediatric health outcomes, including bone mineralization and metabolic health. Additionally, the lab explores nanomaterial synthesis, particularly aligned SiC-C coaxial nanocables, for advanced functional applications. These diverse research directions reflect a multidisciplinary approach integrating microbiology, translational medicine, and materials science to address pressing health and technological challenges.

Aligned SiC-C coaxial nanocables were synthesized via the direct growth of SiC nanowires from silicon substrates and subsequent carbon deposition using pyrolysis of methane; the average diameter of the SiC nanowire cores is 20 nm; the thickness of the C outer layers is controlled in the range 3-50 nm; the degree of crystalline perfection of the graphitic sheets increases with the thickness.

In pediatric type 1 diabetes patients, urinary VDBP excretion did not contribute to low serum 25(OH)D level in the setting of normoalbuminuria. The factors associated with 25(OH)D level during winter periods were daylight outdoor hours and vitamin D intake. Further studies including both micro- and macroalbuminuria patients with type 1 diabetes are warranted.

Aligned silicon carbide nanowires were synthesized directly from the silicon substrates via a novel catalytic reaction with a methane-hydrogen mixture at 1,100 degrees C, with a mean diameter of 40 nm and length of 500 microm; they consist of a single-crystalline zinc blende structure crystal in the [111] growth direction; X-ray diffraction, Raman, and infrared spectroscopy confirm the synthesis of high-purity silicon carbide nanowires.

Backgrounds The age at menarche has decreased worldwide. Previous studies on Korean adolescents have reported a downward trend in age at menarche. This study aimed to investigate the current trends in age at menarche among Korean adolescents using nationally representative data. Materials and methods The study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2021. A total of 50,730 females born between 1927 and 2004 with information on age at menarche were included.
Comprehensive molecular analysis of the 11p15.5 region revealed epigenotype-phenotype correlations in our BWS cohort. Bisulfite pyrosequencing can help clarify epigenotypes. Methylation levels were correlated with fetal growth and clinical severity in patients with BWS.
