Professor Hwan Yong Kim's research lab focuses on sustainable and smart construction technologies, with a strong emphasis on Building Information Modeling (BIM) integration in infrastructure projects, particularly in railway and urban development contexts. The lab investigates the practical implementation challenges and benefits of BIM, while also exploring green infrastructure and urban resilience to climate-related disasters such as flooding. Additionally, the lab examines smart home technologies and ICT-based solutions to address aging population care challenges, highlighting the role of AI and IoT in enhancing elderly care. The research integrates environmental monitoring (e.g., NDVI for flood risk) with data-driven tools like CiteSpace to analyze trends and identify innovation gaps in sustainability and smart urban systems.

A tropical storm Chaba hit the southeastern part of South Korea in 2016. Ulsan, the 8th largest city in terms of the number of population, was especially damaged with heavy flooding, and the calculated damage was approximately $500 million. By using Normalized Differences in Vegetation Index (NDVI), four districts and 46 sub-districts in Ulsan city, South Korea. Analysis results indicate that having a higher proportion of green space inside a city could have a reduction effect on flooding risks.
