Professor Hwang, Ho Young's research lab specializes in structural and functional cardiovascular surgery, with a primary focus on tricuspid valve disease, aortic valve and root surgery, and outcomes following complex cardiac procedures. The lab investigates long-term results of tricuspid valve repair and replacement, particularly in functional tricuspid regurgitation and reoperations, while also examining complications such as intraoperative aortic dissection and neoregurgitation after arterial switch operations. Their work emphasizes surgical techniques, patient-specific anatomical factors (e.g., annular size, aortic-pulmonary size mismatch), and the impact of surgical strategy on mortality and reoperation rates. The lab integrates clinical outcomes with hemodynamic and anatomical assessments to optimize surgical decision-making and improve patient survival and quality of life.

15This meta-analysis indicates that TVr is more beneficial compared with TVR in terms of all-cause mortality. From the available data, TVr is not associated with an increased risk of tricuspid reoperation compared with TVR.
Neoaortic valve regurgitation progressed after the arterial switch operation. The degree of regurgitation was more severe in patients with a size discrepancy between the aorta and the pulmonary artery preoperatively.
We reviewed our experience of intraoperative type A aortic dissection during cardiovascular surgery. From January 1998 to May 2009, intraoperative aortic dissection occurred in 10 of 3421 cardiac surgical patients (M:F=4:6, 62.4+/-8.0 years). Preoperative diagnoses were valvular heart disease (n=6), ischemic heart disease (n=2), combined disease (n=1) and aortic aneurysm (n=1). All underwent total circulatory arrest (TCA) with retrograde cerebral perfusion and the torn aorta was replaced (n=8) o
