Professor Hwasung Yeom's research lab specializes in advanced materials for energy applications, with a focus on surface engineering, plasma-material interactions, and hydrogen-related materials degradation. The lab investigates nanostructured coatings—such as titanium and titania on zirconium wires—for enhancing heat transfer in boiling systems, as well as tantalum cold spray coatings for fusion energy applications due to their hydrogen gettering capabilities. A key research direction involves understanding and mitigating material degradation in high-temperature ammonia environments, critical for next-generation hydrogen energy systems. The lab combines experimental techniques like high-speed imaging, thermal desorption spectrometry, and plasma exposure to develop durable, functional materials for sustainable energy technologies.

15This work examines bubble dynamics for saturated nucleate boiling at atmospheric pressure for pure water on a 0.62 5mm-diameter zirconium wire with nanoparticle surface coating using a high-speed camera. Pool boiling experiments were carried out on the surface-modified wires fabricated by the electrophoretic deposition process using 60- to 80-nm titanium and 60- to 80-nm titania, respectively. Critical heat flux (CHF) enhancements for pool boiling were observed up to 27% for the titanium coating
